 Biography
Steppenwolf's remarkable resilience is largely a reflection of the fierce determination and never-say-die tenacity that's driven Kay for much of his life.
Steppenwolf's self-titled 1968 debut album-recorded in a mere four days-introduced the band's iconoclastic approach, which combined a tough, blues-rooted sound, a penchant for topical lyrics and the gritty growl of Kay, whose brooding presence and trademark shades made him one of the era's most magnetic and identifiable figures.
Steppenwolf soon emerged as one of the few bands of the late '60s to successfully straddle the pop-oriented AM mainstream and the hip FM underground, scoring substantial success on both the single and album charts without tailoring its approach to pander to either constituency.

In the late 1960s, Steppenwolf embodied that era's social, political and philosophical restlessness, building an impressive body of edgy, uncompromising rock 'n' roll that retains its emotional resonance more than 3 decades after the band's formation.
It was around this time that John Kay and Steppenwolf co-founder, Jerry Edmonton (who by then had retired from music in favor of a career in photography), took steps to establish their legal claim to the band name.
Since then, John Kay and Steppenwolf, which now includes longtime members Michael Wilk on keyboards and bass; Ron Hurst on drums; and relatively recent addition Danny Johnson on guitar, have released 7 albums and maintained a busy international touring schedule that keeps the band on the road for several months per year.

It's not often that a band gets stereotyped by one song, but that's exactly what happened to Steppenwolf--the group's first big hit, Born To Be Wild, was an anthem to the joys of riding those big Harleys, and it doomed Steppenwolf to being categorized as a "biker band" forever.
The earliest incarnation of Steppenwolf was The Sparrow, a group formed in Toronto, Canada, that featured frontman John Kay and brothers Dennis and Jerry Edmonton.
The remaining cuts on this disc are songs by the recycled Steppenwolf, and for the most part, each song is pretty forgettable, except for the live version of Born To Be Wild, recorded in 1987 at the Farm Aid Concert.

Steppenwolf's recording of "The Pusher," a Hoyt Axton anti-drug song, fared even worse on radio because of its allusions to drugs and lyrics that some people found objectionable.
Kay recalled a concert where the town's officials forbade the band to sing the words "God damn" from the song, even though the lyrics are asking God to condemn drug dealers.
Kay told the concert-goers about the town officials' proscription and even though the band didn't sing the forbidden words, "every time 'God damn' came up, there were 8,000 people at the top of their lungs, yelling this thing," he recalled.

With its images of freedom, liberty and sexual awakening, few could have known that the roots of the band lay in a Mersey-inspired beat group from Toronto called Jack London and The Sparrows, founded by the song's author, Dennis Edmonton, aka Mars Bonfire.
Jack London and The Sparrows essentially were a pop band riding on the tide of the British Invasion, and while the group never achieved wider success, its key members would go on to carve a niche in the more lucrative American market under a new guise.
