  Beck : Stereopathetic Soul Manure
When Beck made the major-label deal that resulted in his 1994 debut album MELLOW GOLD, his contract stipulated that he be allowed to release his less commercial projects on indie labels.
STEREOPATHETIC SOUL MANURE is a combination of wacky 4-track antics, bizarre electronic sounds, and primitively recorded, postmodern takes on traditional folk/blues styles.
Though this isn't the best place to encounter Beck's myriad talents, SOUL MANURE accurately represents both Beck's reckless, experimental side and his traditional leanings.

Stereopathetic Soulmanure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stereopathetic Soulmanure is a 1994 album by Beck, released on Flipside Records, comprising mostly home demos, live performances, and abstract noise experiments.
Although a lo-fi recording of a largely uncommercial nature, Stereopathetic Soulmanure is actually Beck's second official album, released, perhaps, to downplay his then-notoriety as a novelty act for his current Top 10 hit "Loser".
This pressing also omits the short snippet of dialogue called "Ken" and keeps the bonus noise on the same track as "Modesto." This pressing causes some online tracklists, such as the tracklist at All Music Guide, to be incorrect.

In 1994, Geffen's official debut release of Beck - Mellow Gold made Beck a mainstream smash success; it also led to his iconic status as the "slacker" representative of the alternative rock scene, although the title of the song had been ironic.
At the same time, he released Beck - Stereopathetic Soulmanure on Flipside Records and Beck - One Foot in the Grave on independent K Records.
It's been said said that Beck released Stereopathetic Soulmanure and One Foot in the Grave to shake the Gen X-ers that associated themselves with him and made "Loser" their slacker anthem.

While One Foot in the Grave was a stripped back, accoustic affair, full of fairly straight country, blues and folk, Stereopathetic Soul Manure is an entirely different affair.

With the release of Beck's eighth album Guero a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would be as a time as any to take a look back at the stripped-back blues of One Foot in the Grave and the extremely eclectic collection Stereopathetic Soul Manure.
Both albums were released in 1994 on independent labels K and Flipside at virtually the same time as Beck's major label debut Mellow Gold, which reined in the wacky sonic junk of Stereopathetic Soul Manure, blending it into songs that fused sun-drenched folk and blues with whiteboy slacker hip-hop.
It is also a pretty good representation of what to expect from the record as a whole; intense emotion is given plenty of room to breathe thanks to the minimalist nature of the music, with the occasional lo-fi guitar freakout just to make sure you're still paying attention.

After his legendary slacker anthem "Loser" sparked one of the fiercest major label bidding wars of recent decades, Geffen won the day thanks to their willingness to sign him to a deal that allowed him to release records on other labels.
It was this arrangement that allowed Beck to release two other albums in 1994 in addition to his seminal major label debut Mellow Gold: the chaotic avant-noise piece Stereopathetic Soul Manure on Pasadena-based Flipside Records and the neo-folk-blues album One Foot in the Grave on Olympia-based K.
And has of course spawned legions of imitators, probably more than any other artist of the last decade, if for no other reason that that he has created such a breathtakingly wide range of material to imitate.

The two albums that followed within months of Mellow Gold -- Stereopathetic Soul Manure and One Foot in the Grave -- were specialist releases that disproved the idea that Beck was simply a one-hit wonder.
Songs frequently morph from one genre to another, seemingly unrelated genre -- bursts of noise give way to country songs with hip-hop beats, easy listening melodies transform into a weird fusion of pop, jazz, and cinematic strings; it's genre-defying music that refuses to see boundaries.
"Where It's At" is peppered with soul, jazz, funk, and rap references, while "Novacane" slams from indie rock to funk and back to white noise.

The history of Mutations is likely to give Beck-biters inspiration: when he signed with Geffen, Beck thought he had a great deal that allowed him to continue recording for indie labels.
That's why the year the major put out Mellow Gold, Flipside got the awesome Stereopathetic Soul Manure and K got One Foot in the Grave.
But all that happened before Odelay took off, and Beck went on an endless roadtrip that secured him a solid foothold in the marketplace from now until Congress impeaches Jesse Ventura.
