Sterling submachine guns were produced for British armed forces by Sterling company and Royal Ordnance Arsenal in Fazakerly, England; Long Branch Arsenal in Canada made a slightly modified Sterling under license for Canadian army as C1.
In a slightly modified form, known in British service as L2A3 submachine gun or as "Sterling submachine gun, Mark 4" or Sterling Mk.4 in short, it served with British army until early 1990s, when it was finally replaced by troublesome L85A1 assault rifle.
Sterling submachine guns also were widely sold for export, more than 70 countries had purchased various quantities of Sterling submachine guns.

I would not characterize the SMG as a short range weapon, at least in the 9 x 19 chambering, for I have found them to be usefully accurate at 200 meters.
Uzi SMG and Sterling have similar barrel length (260mm for Uzi vs 198mm for Sterling) and similar ROF (600 rpm for Uzi vs 550mm for Sterling).

The only way to make a Sterling as quiet as a DeLisle would be to arrange for the bolt to remain locked upon firing and to cycle it manually afterwards.
Although long bursts of full chat were discouraged, when the okes are having a cabby on the range they do 'occur,' resulting in having to remove lots of charred wood from the handguard.
