The sternpost assembly was only physically attached to the wreck by the keelson and the keel, all outboard and inboard plankings thorn around that line of fracture.
The rake of the sternpost was measured and found to be circa 70º, with sixteen frames recorded in the tail section, as well as several cant frames, deadwood and outboard planking.
The structural integrity of the sternpost assembly permitted its complete lifting as a whole, without having to be dismantled, as soon as the keel and keelson were sawed.

It appeared to be the central, vertical part of the sternpost of a middlesized carvel-built vessel with a stern construction of the type shown in Fig.
The metal button which was pressed between facing surfaces of the sternpost and the keel was possibly placed there on purpose in connection with some unknown ship-building tradition, similar to placing a coin minted during the year of construction under the mast of vessel.
Had the sternpost belonged to a Swedish naval vessel, as suggested by the button, the wisest course was to begin studies at the War Records Office (Krigsarkivet) in Stockholm, where most Swedish documents of a military historical nature are kept.

If you have a traditionally build boat whose sternpost and deadwoods are large chunks of semi-seasoned oak, it obviously wouldn't be sensible to rely on a tube bonded in with epoxy.
If the designer hasn't made allowance for the extra diameter in sizing the sternpost and deadwoods, it is easy to find there is very little wood left either side of the hole.
When ordering fibreglass sterntubes bear in mind that the tube must project outboard of the sternpost about one third the bearing length in order to provide access to the locking screws that hold the bearing in place, and also to get the propeller far enough back for good water flow.

In another plan a false stern was made fitting the sternpost, to which it was fastened, but straight on its after edge, to which the rudder was hung.
For many years the sternposts have been straight, though mostly set at an angle to the keel, as in the old Shadows, giving a good support for a rudder.
With this form of rudder, shown in the large plates of canoes, a tricing line is sometimes used, being made fast to the rudder, and running over a sheave in the sternpost at deck, by means of which the rudder may be raised in shoal water.

Excavations at the aftermost extremity of the ballast mound uncovered the articulated remains of the tail of the ship, from the end of the keelson to the sternpost.
It appears to have fallen from the sternpost onto its port side sometime after the wrecking incident.

Before making and installing the rudder, it's is a good time to make sure you have enough space between the top of the sternpost and the inner planking of the transom for the rudder head to fit and turn.
They are the “main piece” next to the sternpost, the “flat of the rudder” composing the blade and the “sole”, the replaceable rubbing piece at the bottom.
The rudder hinges are made up of two sections, the pintles (with the pin) that fit on the rudder and the lower receiving half on the sternpost, the gudgeons.

Results after downloading the data from the “Husky” FS/2 Data Collector, yielded a length from the bow to the sternpost of 255.34 ft. and a beam of 44.40 ft. Remnants of the bow stands approximately 2.5 ft above the top of the keelson and the sternpost stands 2.3 ft above.
On days when the wave action is strong, the entire sternpost moves back and forth with each wave.
The sternpost will be short lived and probably will break off soon.
