Stetsasonic, coming out of Brooklyn in the mid-'80s, billed themselves as the first hip-hop band.
Stetsasonic's seminal first album, On Fire, which included the evergreen sample "Go Brooklyn," was released in 1986 on Tommy Boy Records and was followed in 1988 by In Full Gear.
After Stetsasonic's third album, Blood, Sweat & No Tears, was released in 1991, Daddy-O reached the conclusion that the group had run out of inspiration and decided to break up the band.

 Excite - Tommy Boy Music's 20th Anniversary
Alongside the Force M.D.'s, Brooklyn-based Stetsasonic was their strongest signing in the post-electro period.
Stetsasonic, and say Gang Starr, were really experimenting and mixing jazz with hip-hop.
Stetsasonic's "Sally" was another track that looked back to the old-school by using new sampling technology to cut up classic breaks like "Mustang Sally" and James Brown loops.

Gravediggaz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gravediggaz was a hardcore hip hop group from New York City, well-known for their dark sense of humor and abrasive, menacing soundscapes.
The group was formed in 1994 and was effectively a "supergroup", bringing together Prince Paul (formerly producer with De La Soul and Stetsasonic), Frukwan from Stetsasonic, Too Poetic from the Brothers Grimm, and RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan (who at the time of Gravediggaz' formation had only just released their first album).
The group are widely credited as being one of the most influential and pioneering groups in the small hip hop subgenre of horrorcore.

 TrouserPress.com :: Stetsasonic
A fine example of rap's producer-oriented developmental process, Brooklyn's Stetsasonic began as a trio of rappers (Daddy-O, Delite and Fruitkwan), a keyboardist/drummer/scratcher (DBC) and two mixers (Prince Paul and Wise).
The sound of On Fire is hard and spare: one-at-a-time raps over rhythm tracks (including human beat box noises) with sporadic bits of music added.
Topics are likewise familiar ("My Rhyme," "Faye," "Bust That Groove"), but Stetsasonic has a decisive sound that takes full advantage of the varied voices.

For years, the big jazz labels ignored the musical possibilities of opening their vaults to enterprising producers and DJs eager to put their own spin on the classics.
While hip-hop groups such as A Tribe Called Quest, Stetsasonic, and Gang Starr incorporated jazz textures into their music, it wasn't until Us3's groundbreaking 1994 ''Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)," a reworking of Herbie Hancock's ''Cantaloupe Island," that listeners finally got a taste of legendary jazz combined with technological innovation.

Stetsasonic - Audio samples, biography and discography from Bands on Demand Hip-Hop guide on UGO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
One of the first rap groups to use a live band, Stetsasonic formed in 1981 with rappers Glenn "Daddy O" Bolton, Martin "Delite" Wright, and Bobby "Frukwan" Simmons, DJs "Prince Paul" Huston and Leonard "Wise" Roman and Marvin "DBC" Nemley on keyboards/drums/turntables.
They were one of the first groups to regularly talk about messages of fl consciousness, and the group's name came from an earlier group formed by Daddy O and Delite called the Stetson Brothers, after the hat company.
Any discussion of old-school rap would be incomplete without them, and "All That Jazz" remains a classic, linking hip-hop to what some, at the time of its release, considered a more refined style of music.

If hip-hop is a genre of constant change and evolution, DJ and producer Prince Paul and his 15-year career of instant success, surprising failures and an out-of-nowhere comeback almost personifies the genre.
In 1996, Paul released his first solo album, "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" a mostly instrumental record that gave hip-hop a brain and allowed its subconscious to open up on vinyl.
At one point in the conversation, Prince Paul marveled at the fact that he had been working with the label almost half his life, starting when he joined Stetsasonic at age 16.

In addition to the raising of old racial specters, mainstream ignorance also deprives mainstream culture of the energy of rap, and of the broader stimulus of the hip-hop culture to which rap is tied.
And it's probably no accident that one of Stetsasonic's three emcees goes by the handle Daddy-O, also the name of a Chicago deejay-Daddy-O Daylie-whose on-the-air patter rolled jive talk, jazz vocables, the jittery rhythms of bebop and the Mad Hatter humor of the reefer smoker into a House of Mirrors reflection of the English language.

Insecurities aside, Paul’s first foray into hip hop came in 1984 when he joined the group Stetsasonic, and nearly two decades later he’s still doing what he does best.
It all started way back in the late 1970’s, when a ten-year old Paul was collecting 45’s and playing them on his Mickey Mouse turntable rather than playing with toys like his friends.
This hobby soon developed into a full-blown passion, and eventually in 1984 DJ Paul (pre-Prince moniker) joined Stetsasonic for his first real experience in the music industry.

Hip-hop legend Prince Paul has produced more classic hip-hop records in his time than most people own in their collections.
As a one-time member of De La Soul, The Gravediggaz and Handsome Boy Modelling School, Paul has amassed, throughout his 15 years in the business, a formidable collection of unreleased tracks in his home basement.
With tracks by De La Soul, Biz Markie, Stetsasonic, The Gravediggaz and plenty more, some might call these undiscovered gems Hip-Hop Gold Dust.

I met STETSASONIC in 1984.  So that would be my first break.  I was DJing at a block party.  It was a DJ battle.  That's when I thought I was nice.  There was 4 sets in the battle and my set had the most crowd.  That's when STETSASONIC approached me and I joined the group.
STETSASONIC was recognized as the first Hip Hop band.  Would you agree with that statement?
I would agree with that.  People may argue and say Pumpkin because he was the producer for record labels like PROFILE and others back then.  We were the first as a group to be out.  You know!  Having an emcee, DJ, Keyboards and the Human Beat Box.  I think we were the first.

Though popular success has largely eluded the Roots, the Philadelphia group showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio.
Though their album works have been inconsistent affairs, more intent on building grooves than pushing songs, the Roots' live shows are among the best in the business.
