The Prussian Baron von Steuben, being a newcomer to the Revolutionary cause in America, was in a position to see many of the deficiencies in military discipline and their causes.
Steuben's method of discipline and training was so successful for one main reason, it was catered to the soldier and not to the officer.
Steuben method created a professionalism in the Continental Army which, along with the ideologies of the men, was enough to keep the moral of the soldier high despite the many hardships of winter camps like Valley Forge and Morristown.

Steuben crystal is a vital source of inspiration to these three men: Houghton, Gates and Waugh.
Through an active interchange of ideas between themselves and other artists, and with uncanny awareness of the beauty of pure crystal, they have heightened that beauty by means of truly aesthetic designs-designs of utter charm and originality which are subtly more appealing for their gracious subservience to the crystal they enhance.
Throughout Steuben designs their engraving, cutting and shaping are noticeably executed by craftsmen who are interested in capturing the exact spirit of the designer; they inject no jarring interpolations of techinque to unbalance the composition.

When the new drill master, Baron von Steuben arrived in camp in February 1778 to train the army, he immediately recognized that Washington's men were committed to their cause, but needed more military order.
Accordingly, Steuben explained to the dedicated citizen soldiers why a training program was necessary instead of forcing the soldiers to submit to the harsh discipline that ruled European armies of the day.
