 Illustrated History of the Serbs
Serbia's grand zupan Stefan Nemanja, founder of the Nemanjic dynasty, died in 1199.
Nemanja had fulfilled his wish at last: that Stevan rule the lands and Vukan be the "grand prince" of one region.
Stevan's final inauguration as head of the Serbian state marked the beginning of a new era not only in the Serbian history, but in the history of the entire Balkan peninsula.

Stefan Nemanja (Стефан Немања) (Stefan I) (ca 1132-February 13 1199 or 1200) was the Grand Zupan of Raška (Rascia), located in the central west region of the Balkans from 1166 or 1168 to 1196.
He appointed his oldest son Vukan Nemanjic as ruler in province of Zeta (modern Montenegro) with cities of Antivari and Cattaro (today Bar and Kotor, both located at the Montenegro Adriatic coast).
In 1196 Stefan relinguished his power to his son Stefan II, Nemanja, took the monastic name Simeon and joined his youngest son Rastko (monastic name Sava) on the Mount Athos.

 Miroslav Gospel - Facts
Copied and illuminated in the last quarter of the 12th century for Prince Miroslav of Hum, brother of Stevan Nemanja, this Evangelistria survived the turbulent centuries of Serbian history from the time of the regional warlords to the rise and fall of medieval Serbia.
The manuscript then survived the long centuries of Turkish occupation when it formed part of the library at Chilandari monastery, the date and means of its acquisition unknown.
Prior to that fateful year for the Serbian state and the Nemanjić dynasty, in 1190 in Zahumlje ended the reign of Nemanja'a brother Miroslav, whose territory was inherited by the youngest son of the Raška Grand Zhupan, Rastko, until he, too, withdrew to Mt. Athos.

The Swrbian commandant Stevan Sindelic, with 3000 of his combatants,fought against 10000 Turks on the Cegar Hill in 1809.

Because the letter "J" did not exist before Vuk Karadzic's (Serbian reformer) reforms, but the letter "JAT" did exist, the reader could interpret the sound to be read in any way, depending on which dialect he spoke and how the dialect or regionalism pronounces the sound "J".
Prince Miroslav, brother of Grand Zhupan Stefan Nemanja, was the ruler of Hum, an area that largely coincides with the territory of present-day Herzegovina.
One possibility is that Nemanja brought it with him when he founded Chilandari.

The son of Serbian National leader Stevan Nemanja, Saint Sava was born in 1169.
As a young man Saint Sava yearned for the spiritual life, which lead him to flee to the Holy Mountain where he became a monk, and with rare zeal, followed the ascetic practices.
Sava obtained independence for the Serbian Church, granted by the emperor and the Patriarch of Constantinople, and became its first archbishop.

Eight centuries ago, Byzantium Emperor Aleksei III gave a hrisovulja (an act or declaration) which grants Monastery Hilandar and the region around the monastery to be an "eternal present to the Serbs".
He gave the act to St. Sava and his father St. Simeon (Stevan Nemanja).
From this moment, Hilandar Monastery was for centuries to come, home to Serbs, Serbian religion and culture.
