Alten manages to combine the science fiction elements of a giant shark being on the loose with the horror elements of the human characters' reactions (and machinations) quite nicely.
Alten makes them yell out with pure hatred for the shark (which seems to do a good job of pushing their buttons--maybe the shark is like a velociraptor in that "it's thinking") but does nothing with these characters when the shark get away.
Steve Alten brought us to the depths of the ocean with MEG and now he brings all of it back once again with The Trench.

But, Alten's saving grace is what started his career: Carcharadon Megalodon (or something like that.) The shark scenes are well-done, and although they are overly gory, it was nice to see the Meg in some new situations.

Alten also tries to give all the Scottish characters authentic accents, and by “authentic” I mean “Groundskeeper Willie.” Alten also seems to think Scottish people write with an accent.
However, Steve Alten has presented his conclusions as the real solution to the Loch Ness mystery, both in his newsletter and in the introduction to the book.

Alten’s characters are well thought out zesty individuals, dialog is full of grit and acceptable, settings swell with particulars in this well written work.
It is obvious Writer Alten has done a good bit of research into the background surrounding Loch Ness and the myths surrounding it as well as investigation into the marine world and those who delve its depths.

Another example would be Steve Alten's Domain, which unfortunately shows some of the weaknesses in conspiracy fiction.
