Steve Brown (1890 - 15 September 1965) was a jazz musician best known for his work on string bass.
He was born with the name Theodore Brown, but acquired the nickname "Steve" for his devil-may-care personality, after Steve Brodie, a man who became famous for jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge on a dare.
Steve Brown first went north to Chicago in 1915 with brother Tom in the first wave of jazz musicians to go to the city.

Steve Brodie 1863–1901, Brooklyn bookmaker who gained immediate fame and a measure of immortality by allegedly jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge and surviving the fall, on July 23, 1886.
It was claimed that Brodie had not, in fact, jumped from the bridge but that a dummy was used as he hid under a pier.
In any case he gained the publicity he was seeking, and a tavern he opened shortly after in the Bowery became a mecca for sightseers.
