  Off the Kuff: Steve Brozak
Meet Steve Brozak, who may have a major role to play in the Democrats' efforts to win back the House in November.
Brozak, who plans to retire from the Reserve May 1, began turning against the Republican Party during the South Carolina primary in 2000, when a Bush ally accused Sen. John McCain of neglecting his fellow Vietnam veterans.
Brozak decided to change his party affiliation, the only person he told ahead of time was his father, an immigrant who had piloted a fighter plane in a brief uprising against the Nazi occupation of his native Yugoslavia and wound up in a slave-labor camp.

Brozak was a Republican for 20 years before switching sides and running as a self-described conservative-Democrat with strong commitments to choice on the abortion issue and stem-cell research.
At nearly every campaign stop, Brozak likes to point out that Ferguson was fined $210,000 by the Federal Election Commission in 2003 for loaning his 2000 congressional campaign $525,000 from a trust fund his parents had set up for him.
Brozak is quick to point out that Ferguson has voted with Bush on more than 90 percent of the issues.

Brozak is also a long-time advocate of stem cell research and has experience in the bio-tech and financial sectors, lest you think he's some one-trick pony.

Marine declares war on Bush - Salon
But as Brozak sees it, Ferguson is just a synecdoche for the Bush team, whose failings drove Brozak out of the Marines and the Republican Party and into the first political campaign of his life.
The campaign between Brozak and Ferguson is almost a microcosm of the race for the presidency, as it turns largely on how people view Bush, Iraq and the war on terror.
Like John Kerry, Brozak may be able to win only if at least some of those who voted for Bush in 2000 have come to see the president as either incompetent, mendacious or both.

Ever since then, Brozak's been in high demand--so much so, in fact, that when the security guards refuse to budge and let Brozak onto the ninth floor, the CBS Radio reporter leaves his booth and comes to Brozak, doing the interview with him next to a trash can in front of an elevator.
