Steve Cropper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steve "The Colonel" Cropper (born Stephen Lee Cropper, on October 21, 1941) is a guitarist, songwriter, producer, and soul musician.
Cropper was born on a farm outside Dora, Missouri.
When American Records founder Chips Moman left Stax, the young Cropper was given the keys to the studio, which he opened everyday; he became the company's A and R man, and shared engineering duties with Stewart.

 Untitled
When Steve 'The Colonel' Cropper does emerge from the elevator, there is no doubt who he is. He is bigger, taller and looks much younger than I expected (since he cut his first record straight out of High School in Memphis in 1960, he must be at least in his mid-fifties).
Cropper was under contract at Stax in Memphis throughout the sixties, both as a musician and as a producer.
Cropper leans back and holds his hands up in the air, recalling his amazement at hearing the finest soul voice of all time coming out a guy he thought was a roadie.

Cropper also had his hand in producing and writing many of these great hits such as "Dock of the Bay" which he penned with Otis Redding.
Cropper's tone has a metallic ferocity, yet his playing is always sparse and pervaded with a feeling of suspense.
Steve Cropper's studio work may be the highest embodiment of play-for-the-song minimalism.

Steve Cropper : Playing My Thang - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
As a result, Playing My Thang is not so much about Steve Cropper's guitar playing as his singing, the obvious reason the early-'80s release hasn't exactly achieved classic status.
Cropper's main business seems to be trying to pull off the vocal, complete with "I'll be loving you, loving you" chorus.
Any chord Cropper played on any Booker T. & the MG's album is better than this entire album -- a realization that, although highly complimentery to the genius of Steve Cropper, is of little help when it comes to concieving just how he could have made a better solo album.

Five Horizons: Articles, Guitar Player 7/94
As Stone, Steve, and the rest of Pearl Jam cranked out Neil's "Rockin' In The Free World" onstage that night, the connections between the old wisdom and the young fire seemed as deep as the pocket that six musicians, regardless of age, pumped out in ecstatic unison.
STEVE: The first time I heard fl gospel in Memphis, it was like, "What is this?" I mean, I grew up in a church that had an a cappella choir and all that sort of stuff, so I knew about church music.
Steve Vai is an amazing musician who will always have a niche as an eclectic, wild player, but I think bands are the things that truly change people's attitudes -- people working together.

It was very obvious that Berry Gordy wanted the pop market," said Steve Cropper, longtime guitarist/songwriter/producer/arranger for the MGs and Stax, at his Norwich hotel, in an interview between two recent weekend shows at the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den..
Everyone in the industry knew he was cut short of superstardom, and Cropper remembers that as turning point for Stax.
Cropper and the group have spent so many years, in sessions and on the road, with so many artists that he has a unique perspective about many of them.

An impromptu brief two song reunion occurred in 1986 as Booker, Steve, and Duck by chance were all in Memphis at the same time as the Memphis Music Festival was being staged.

Booker T's band, including Cropper, was enlisted as the backup band for Blues Brothers John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in both of the "Blues Brothes" movies.
