Like an orthographic loop, the phrase "Steve Fisk cut tape" pops up throughout the credits to the Northwest cassette bricoleur 's arithmetically questionable Over and Thru the Night: A 10-Year Retrospective 1980-1987 (K).
Steve Fisk takes a great sampled leap forward on Pigeonhed (Sub Pop), the eponymous psychedelic-Seattle-soulman project he's spliced together with tricked-up and treated singer Shawn Smith (of the bands Brad and Satchel).
Fisk and Smith conjure the moods, the sonic auras, of singers as diverse as Prince, Bobby Brown, Hall and Oats, Bowie, and your favorite Bee Gee.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Steve Fisk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Fisk's early "solo" sonic explorations were rooted in the cut-and-paste aesthetic, and digital production methods allow him, as the title implies, an almost infinite amount of control over his raw materials.
Fisk, on the other hand, wants his work to be not only listenable, but enjoyable.
There's a very pretty vocal performance somewhere in the mix, but Fisk seems determined to hack it to bits or obscure it with smeared optigan atmosphere.

Bio: Few figures exerted greater influence over the contemporary Pacific Northwest indie music scene than Steve Fisk -- while a veteran of bands including Pell Mell and Pigeonhed, he earned his greatest renown as a producer, helming sessions for acts including Nirvana, the Screaming Trees, Soundgarden and Beat Happening.
Already a veteran of countless short-lived bands by the time he made his solo debut in 1980 with contributions to the compilations Sub Pop 5 and Life Elsewhere, in 1985 Fisk resurfaced as a member of the instrumental outfit Pell Mell, which issued a series of well-received efforts on SST.
In 1990 Fisk produced Nirvana's Blew EP, followed by sessions with Some Velvet Sidewalk, Treepeople, Unwound and the late Steven Jesse Bernstein; in 1993, he teamed with vocalist Shawn Smith in the electronic duo Pigeonhed, issuing a self-titled LP on Sub Pop.

Fisk's reputation as a wonderful producer was already being established by the time he stepped out with his solo debut, 448 Deathless Days.
This could be seen in who ended up helping on the album -- various SST labelmates he had already produced or worked with, like Negativland and the Screaming Trees, as well as bandmates in Pell Mell, stepped in here and there on various instruments.
Generally, Fisk relied on others to provide regular rock instrumentation as needed, though often tweaked with in the studio, while he concentrated on the overall song writing, arranging, and a wide variety of keyboards, from piano to optigan.

But Steve Fisk's mid-career musical transition makes the mid-career transitions of most artists look inconsequential by comparison.
Known for two decades as a heavyweight of the Pacific Northwest indie rock scene as a member of Pell Mell and Pigeonhed and a producer of seminal albums by Beat Happening, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, The Halo Benders, and others, Steve Fisk has reinvented himself as a creator of squirmy, impossibly weird, ambient experimental music.
In fact, Fisk's solo debut way back in 1987, 448 Deathless Days on SST Records, demonstrated his penchant for sonic tweaking and musical collage art, though it relied for the most part on traditional rock instrumentation.

If Steve Fisk were in law enforcement, he might specialize in reassembling shredded documents or finding unexpected yet plausible patterns in seemingly dissimilar events.
Then again, given the law's drive for order, Fisk would more likely be the Fox Mulder of his agency, his brilliance recognized but also seen as bizarre and disordered - for Fisk is not the sort of man to paint inside anyone else's lines.
Fortunately, Fisk is a musician and producer, one who became fascinated with the potential of the sampler well before most mainstream musicians recognized its possibilities.

Testing the limits of what people might want to hear at first, Fisk arguably re-educates us on what music is, and where it comes from, finding rhythm and melody in what many now call Intelligent Dance Music.
999 Levels of Undo shows that Fisk's transformation is still a work in progress, but when he's on, the record is right up there with any of Fisk's other accomplishments.
