 Steve Hillage
Now primarily a producer and techno-animal, guitarist Steve Hillage first established himself as one of the leading names in the 60s psychedelic rock movement.
Upon returning to music in 1971, Hillage had a brief stint with his own band Khan, another brief stint with ex-Soft Machine frontman Kevin Ayers, and then moved on to the group that really established his reputation: the hippies-from-outer-space collective Gong.
Hillage made his return to performing through a chance meeting with The Orb's Alex Patterson in 1989, which led to the creation of the techno band System 7 in 1991.

Before going solo Hillage was known as a powerful warrior of the weapon known in the biz as "the axe," for all your laymans, that means guitar.
Fish Rising is a really excellent album that shows Hillage slightly shying away from the shredding solos and focusing more on the band as a whole and the songs shifting and the different parts, even though there are a few wicked rippers.
Hillage brings the perfect guitar work to the album giving you the exact amount of note movement that is needed.

Nearly all Steve Hillage's and Gong's stuff can be basically categorised as "psychadelic/space rock/hippy-drippy", but is usually less rambling with tighter song structures than that classification implies.
Steve is not credited on the sleeve (presumably due to legal problems with Virgin; the inside photo even has his face masked out!), but can clearly be heard.
I'm told that Hillage Jams with Orb regularly at their performances, and am hoping that he will be present when they perform here in san Francisco next week.

After steve hillage's magnificent debut, much less his incredible work with gong which practically defined the role of space rock guitar, the sophmore 'L' is a somewhat more staight ahead performance.
Hillage started to sing about things that interested him really for the first time on this album, mainly consisting of how wonderful the world will be in the forthcoming electric age.
Hillage's later albums were better, in my view, but this one for some reason seems to really stand out as something really special.

Steve Hillage may be 52 but happily neither himself nor System 7 show any signs of slowing down.
System 7 have come in for their fair share of flak and praise from the critics, but the fact is they have a durability that most dance artists would give their eye teeth for, not to mention a loyal fanbase.
Hillage has recently acquired the rights to re-release four of the band's albums on his own A-Wave label - '777', 'Point 3: Fire', 'Point 3: Water' and 'Golden Section' - so RA interrupted his sequencing antics for some banter.

During 1992, Hillage and Giraudy released the British-only singles "Freedom Fighters" and "Altitude" -- as System 7, since the restriction applied only in America -- and prepared their second album.

This hippie rocker from 70's UK-French spacerock band Gong staged a surprising comeback via dance music in the 90's, collaborating with The Orb and also forming his own techno outfit System 7 with old partner Miquette Giraudy.
That comeback was largely due to a chance meeting in the chilllout space of a London club in the late 1980's where The Orb's Dr Alex Paterson was spinning sounds from Rainbow Dome Musick and entirely unaware of Hillage's presence until he approached Paterson in the DJ booth.
The music was originally recorded for use in the Rainbow Dome at a 1979 Mind-Body-Spirit festival in London.

Another take on this would be a Hill Eddington age number, a Steve Hillage or Hillage named in honour of the 70s prog-rock hero.
As with orthodox Hill Eddingtons, the Hillage could be further refined to accommodate hill types: just multiply by the height of the hill in metres.
I guess the optimal hill-category Hillage for this country would likely come from some active octogenarian living near Achintee, as 80 x 1344 = 107,520 - although I'd be very impressed if anyone got near 50,000.

He branched out to carry his own version of the Gong gospel of personal freedom via his special blend of cosmic brotherhood/ eastern religion/ new age/ pyramids/ ley lines/ crystals and some ferociously jazz fusion and progressive rock guitar blended with space rock synths.

Culled from two BBC radio concerts in 1976 and 1979, this is much better than Hillage's studio albums, with the performances offering a funky kick and a real sense of adventure, since he can stretch out with his guitar work.
