Steve Jones is a brilliant science writer, capable of teasing, cajoling, entertaining and educating the reader without pain.
Jones has not only pinched Darwin's title The Descent of Man but learned his technique of persuasion in which the potential critic is disarmed by having the faults, problems and dirt on the subject brought out into the open and given a good public washing.
Jones, a geneticist and author of Darwin's Ghost, traces the development of maleness from its origins as a parasitic stratagem by which certain microbes forced others to replicate their genes for them, to the dawning age of cloning, which could, in theory, allow women to dispense with men's reproductive services altogether.

STEVE JONES: First I was concerned if I was ever going to play again, because the guy told me my elbow he told me to do surgery repair on a tendon and scraping the elbow, you never know how it's going to heal.

Amazon.ca: Darwin's Ghost: Books: Steve Jones   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Jones is not writing to convince his audience that all the variety of life that we see about us arose out of simpler forms (or, even, just one simple type of proto-creature) by descent with modification over eons of time, with the environment doing the selective breeding, as it were.
Jones simply assumes we believe the by-now-well-established facts of geology, and uses these to discuss the spottiness and contrariness of the fossil record.
Jones throws in a nugget of interesting knowlege on occasion, but the book is clearly aimed at people who want to read it as a substitute for Darwin's work, and it simply is insufficient and inelegant when judged by that standard.

Directly after his retirement, Jones went into broadcasting, and his rapport with the eccentric Bill Walton made that duo popular with television audiences during their NBC days.
Jones: Kevin Garnett is a unique individual in the sense that he knows how good he is, what he means to the organization, and he wants to bring that team a championship, and that's where is focus is all of the time.

Steve Jones - Biography - AOL Music
It was around this time that Jones befriended drummer Paul Cook, and the duo formed a local band to jam on their favorite covers.
Jones and Cook decided to remain together in the wake of the Pistols' split, as they contributed session work to ex-New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders' star-studded 1978 solo release, So Alone.
Jones had also launched a brief solo recording career around this time, issuing a pair of heavy metal-esque releases -- 1987's Mercy and 1989's Fire and Gasoline (which included songs co-written by Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and the Cult's Ian Astbury, with guest appearances by Guns N' Roses Axl Rose and the Cult's Billy Duffy).

Almost like a Whale (Darwin's Ghost) - Steve Jones
Jones understands and respects Darwin's argument in a way that allows his modern contributions to remain always relevant, even when they seem to wander away from it, and provide the needed support.
Jones shows clearly how sound the theory of natural selection is and how broad and far reaching its consequences.
Jones' shockingly says that he never met "a biology undergraduate who has read The Origin of Species", itself a sad show of ignorance and closed-mindedness (as Darwin's book, though not up-to-date, is still a splendid (and well presented) example of the scientific process and the scientist at work -- see our review).

Steve: Well...yes, and no. It has caught up with it insofar as it seems easier now than before to make the case that we should study the popular (if for no other reason than that it has consequences, though just what those consequences are is still hotly contested).
Steve: Many of the 1960s critics who've hung on into the 1970s (and beyond) were writing for counterculture publications in the US, and many must have at least been reading the New Journalism just judging from their style.
I think at every magazine and newspaper I wrote for there was at least one woman, but women were treated as insufficiently different...that is, they were "one of the guys," and whether that caused them to have less of a presence than they might otherwise, or whether it was caused by patriarchal tendencies, well...yes.

Amazon.com: Y: The Descent of Men: Books: Steve Jones   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Jones' sardonic wit enlivens the molecular foundations of maleness, explaining hormones, baldness, sperm count, and even lineages of bastardy in language that is both educational and entertaining.
Jones' example is expressed in the recognition that all the family lineages since William the Conquerer had died out.
What Mr Jones doesn"t realise is that not all sperm are designed to impregnate, as research has proven that the majority of sperm are in fact soldier sperm designed to seek out a rival males sperm present in a woman and prevent it from fertilizing her egg, much like a game of american football.

Regardless of whether or not the previous hole in his life was filled, Jones' addiction soon created another, with infinitely deeper proportions.
