 Splendid: Features: The Church
Steve Kilbey: We had a manager for a very short time; she became very enthusiastic and went and sacked our record company, umm...regardless of the fact that we had kind of a contract with them, that's what happened.
Steve Kilbey: Oh yeah, he's completely involved, and he's got a whole lot of skills and outlook and stuff, and he wasn't there in the glory days, so he's divorced from all that, and he's into all this high-tech sort of stuff, like Pro Tools, so he did all of that as well.
Steve Kilbey: I don't know if it's a favorite theme; it just strikes me how you go 'round this world and see everyone fooling around with the mundane, and people sitting inside watching Court TV when there's this whole wonderful world out there that they could be experiencing.

 Old Steve Kilbey Interview
Kilbey is describing what it's like being mobbed by hordes of young girls after an under 18 concert in Melbourne last year.
Kilbey, as he is frequently only too aware, has along with his three good looking, pale complexioned mates become something of a pop star.
Kilbey tells me though that people do write to him saying that he's got the answer to all their problems and that they realise he's on a higher plane of consciousness and that they've got to get in touch with him.

Steve: When you've got all this creativity, but you're not sure where it's going - and as soon as it kind of reveals itself a little bit - where it wants to go - then you sort of jump on that.
Steve: They were, except in Paris - Paris was a complete waste of time as far as I was concerned, but England...
Steve: Well, what we've done in the past is we've jammed and then from the jam we get a kind of a rough nucleus of the song and then we work on it and work on it and polish it and polish it and rehearse it and then record it.

Earthed - Steve Kilbey - Song Listings
This turned out to be a representative move in more ways than one, though, in that the music was entirely instrumental; presumably Kilbey's intent was for people to read along while listening.
Given the often-noticed connection between Kilbey's singing and that of inspiration David Bowie, it's not too much a stretch to say that Earthed functions in much the same way as the Thin White Duke's own instrumentals did during his late-'70s Berlin days.
Kilbey's guitar playing is fair enough, if not as remarkable as that of bandmates Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes, but still does the business on songs like "A Loveletter From Sydney" and the slow opening surge of "The Dawn Poems." ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide [-] Continue

Steve Kilbey has always been light years ahead of others in the music industry - the CD sounds as if it was recorded in 2004, not two decades ago!!
This CD is the result of his brother's successful effort to restore a couple of Steve's 20 year old homemade reel to reel tapes of unreleased songs.
These are songs Steve did on his own and then largely forgot about before they were recently rediscovered and restored.

The Slow Crack - Steve Kilbey - Music Reviews
Certainly fans of Kilbey's sometimes-cryptic lyrical imagery and his sighing, melancholic voice (and accompanying melodies) won't complain.
When Kilbey more self-consciously stretches, the results are often intriguing, such as the slightly forbidding, cool "Ariel Songs." Then again, "Surrealist Woman Blues," though it avoids completely being a formal exercise thanks to its woozy chorus, doesn't really do much more than pretend it's a late-night bar somewhere.
Of the extra tracks, "Transaction" itself is the best, a smart, slyly snaky effort that would have easily made for a great Church number and sounds just fine on its own; Kilbey's reliance on indifferent drum programming instead of a real drummer is the one real flaw.
