Steve Lawson/Jez Carr - "Conversations"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
My introduction to bassist Steve Lawson's music was his And Nothing But The Bass CD (see AI #15), a solo bass performance that featured Lawson playing with a live sampler and accompanying himself on the resulting loops.
Lawson is also embellishing the meditative duo performance with guitar-like playing and fun freaky bits produced by his looping techniques.
In summary, Steve Lawson has got to be one of the most tasteful bassists I've heard in a long time and is certainly a creative player who focuses on sound and the quality of individual notes, not to mention different ways of speaking with his instrument.

As the sun dipped in the horizon, Steve headed over to one of his favourite places around the base, Lawson’s farm — unaware that he was about to spend his last hour of liberty for the next ten years.
Steve was good with machines.” The lanky boy stood on the tractor’s floorboard, leaning against the fender, while the farmer rode across his land.

Steve Lawson - "Grace and Gratitude"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
For the sake of those unfamiliar with Steve Lawson, it's obligatory to begin each review by noting that he is a solo bassist that uses real time looping, recording in real time and then playing over the top, and doing so by the rule of "all live, no additional overdubs".
Steve makes no claims to a link between the theme and the music, but with these thoughts in mind I fused my brain to the headphones and settled in for the 75 minute ride.
Steve lulls along with an easy paced bass jam, encircled by waves of pulsations and drones that reach orbit breaking heights of brain massaging intensity.

CD Baby: STEVE LAWSON AND THEO TRAVIS: For The Love Of Open Spaces - from evor
Steve Lawson is no stranger to the world of looping.
For the musician, there is lots of great stuff to listen for: Steve's lyrical fretless playing, Satriani-esque distorted guitar soloing on bass, tasteful use of digital effects, and his fluid implementation of loops.
It's a good starting point for Steve work and will lead you to other masterpieces such as "Conversations" and his greatest album to date "Not Dancing for Chicken" Since Christmas is coming up why not treat your family members to a copy they won't be disapointed and neither will you.

Steve Lawson and Guests - a Concert Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
For the second Lawson was joined by cellist Harry Napier and percussionist Mark Lloyd and the evening closed with a solo acoustic set from Andy Thornton.
In this case the laid back nature of Lawson's playing fitted well with the imagery and short film clips which were to be found around the church building, but the sound was certainly full enough to absorb the listener's attention.
It was interesting to see the various loops which form the basis of each song building up and while the wide range of gadgets almost inevitably caused a couple of technical problems, the mix of experimental and jazz translated well to a live context.

CD Baby: STEVE LAWSON: Grace And Gratitude
It's been a busy two years for Steve Lawson since the release of his last all-solo album, Not Dancing For Chicken at the tail-end of 2002.
Yes, Steve is a "looper" (user of a variety of digital delay devices to musically "clone" himself in performance) but the technology never gets in the way of the music.
As a fellow musician, it would be very, very easy to jealously resent the fact Steve brings to his music a complete package of all-around spontaneous compositional skills, a childlike inventive playfulness, real showmanship, and a truly unnerving command of his instrument that goes well beyond the usual assumptions of its musical role.

Of particular interest is the Lexicon Jam Man that he utilizes as a loop/sampler to propel each musical excursion along by maintaining an underlying bed track of chords, groove figures, and effected ambient passages.
Basically, in lay terms, this allows Steve to record passages, which then loop or repeat until he changes the pattern or adds to it, and simultaneously play melodic figures over the top of the loop with the luxury of live self accompaniment.
Steve concludes this track by invoking the vision of layered UK EM style keyboards with very believable accuracy.

Steve Lawson - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
But such an animal is Steve Lawson's debut release, recorded live at London's under appreciated Troubadour and treading a path somewhere on the experimental side of jazz.
The heavily layered sound which results is some of the mellowest you're likely to hear, but retains its experimental edge with a range of sounds and tones which are rarely heard from an instrument whose usual role is rhythmical.
That ability to develop melody and rhythm together in a solo setting is what allows Steve Lawson to venture into territory that few bass players do.
