Steve Marriott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marriott is also reputed to have been Jimmy Page's benchmark when selecting a lead singer for Led Zeppelin (the other being another rowdy-voiced Brit, Terry Reid), and there are unmistakeable stylistic and timbral similarities between the voices of Marriott and Led Zeppelin's lead singer Robert Plant.
Marriott quit abruptly at the end of 1969, frustrated by the group's inability to break out of their teen-pop image and their failure to achieve major success in the lucrative American market.
Marriott also had a solo career after the breakup of Humble Pie, appeared on recordings by French pop singer Johnny Hallyday and New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders and wrote and recorded with Australian drummer and songwriter John Lee (ex The Dingoes).

Marriott was, of course, much more than singer and front man for the Small Faces.
It is tempting to view the latter part of Marriott's life as a maelstrom of ever- diminishing returns; The Man hostage to a capricious personality and harnessed to a debilitating booze and drug habit.
And, despite it all, to the end of his life Steve Marriott remained a riveting presence on stage.

While Steve Marriott was an icon for his generation, and the subsequent generation to some extent, and produced many memorable songs, his story is very sad.
His life was ruined by drink and drugs and he took on a schizophrenic personality that detroyed his three marriages and, ultimately, contributed to his early death in 1991.
The conclusion seems to be that everyone loved and respected Marriott but his schizophrenia and hyperative behaviour made him very difficult to live with.

Steve Marriott died ten years ago and many musicians who have great respect for him appeared together for one night only at the Astoria in Central London to pay tribute.
Steve's daughter Molly then joined the fray with her band D2M for the Humble Pie song Black Coffee, again with lead vocals by Debbie Bonham.
While the Small Faces songs tended to have the stronger crowd reception during the evening (Humble Pie having been bigger in the US than in the UK), this was truly a great moment with what turned out to be a classic Pie line-up, albeit just for the one night.

Marriott's tenure with the Small Faces ended after he stalked offstage during a New Year's Day 1969 performance; he soon recruited ex-Herd guitarist Peter Frampton to form the hard-rock combo Humble Pie, and after months of woodshedding at Marriott's Essex cottage the group issued its debut single "Natural Born Boogie," cracking the UK Top Five.
The LP As Safe as Yesterday Is followed, but again American success eluded Marriott until the release of the 1971 Humble Pie live album Performance--Rockin' the Fillmore, which went gold.
Marriott spent the better part of the decade in seclusion, but was planning to reunite with Frampton when he lost his life in a house fire on April 20, 1991.

Marriott's career after The Small Faces initially centred on the group he formed with Peter Frampton, Humble Pie.
After six years of touring in the US, Marriott left Humble Pie and attempted to reignite The Small Faces, but when this failed, he fell back on returns to Humble Pie and stints in Europe with Packet Of Three, releasing two solo albums before his death in '91.
This patchy compilation gives an idea of the music he made in his later years, but offers nothing by way of documentation.
