Chris Ruel's Progressive Music Reviews: Steve Morse
One of the aspects of Steve Morse's compositional style that strikes me in a good way, is that he has reached a level of maturity in his composition that he does not need to prove his technical capabilities with a lot of unnecessarily fast and overwhelming guitar technicianry.
Morse instead focuses on striving for melodic invention and compositional vision, which are much more difficult objectives to tackle and make the music enjoyable to listen to.
Morse's playing is nothing short of spectacular as he demonstrates his proficiency across the many styles that his arsenal encompasses.

After two days, Morse was playing a song, but when it got to the point that the instructor was only transposing songs off the radio, he says he knew it was time to expand his knowledge in other ways.
While Morse was eventually ready to return to his music, he was not prepared to resurrect the Dregs quite yet, because he needed to keep control over what was happening in whatever band he would work with and also because the others had already moved on at that time.
While Morse can’t imagine what it would be like to hear his own work as a finished product for the first time, with such diversity in his music, he advises that it may take a second listen to receive the true impact of the album.

Morse has the jingle jangle rhythmic sound down, but I would have liked it more if he would have played lead in the style of Roger McGuinn when McGuinn was at his peak as a player.
Most of Steve Morse's albums sound dated, as if they were recorded in the height of the eighties' hair-band guitar pyrotechnics extravanganzas, even when they were recorded during the reign of alternative Seattle grunge bands.
Steve Morse does a fantastic job of emulating the various styles of his favorite guitarists while still maintaining enough originality to make it his own.
