The band was founded by Marc Bolan in 1967 and gave one performance as a five piece rock band at the Roundhouse[?] before immediately breaking up in disarray.
Bolan retained the services of Steve Peregrine Took and began producing eccentric pastoral and folk tinged ditties steeped in Tolkienian mythology, spiritual homages to Gene Vincent thrown into the whimsical mix for good measure.

The group was simply a duo of Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar, ex-John's Children) and Steve Peregrine Took (vocals, bongos, Chinese gong, assorted percussion, Pixiephone) and their music was largely acoustic (exclusively so on the first 2 albums).
Peaking the UK hippy trip, they wandered through their musical terrain of magic, mystics, elves, witches, with Bolan's ethereal vocals sung in a voice that on occasion could not be proven to have any relation to the English language.
Took was replaced on this album by Micky Finn (backing vocals, Moroccan Clay Drums, table, bass, finger cymbals).

In late 1960s, Bolan and percussionist Steve Peregrine Took enjoyed a small but fanatic following amongst London's flower children and its underground press.

Guitarist and vocalist Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld, London 1947) had recorded a couple of singles earlier in the decade but it wasn't until he hooked up with the improbably named Steve Peregrine Took (bongos/vocals) that he created any sort of ripples in the UK hippie ooze.
It went to #2 in the UK and with a puff of magic powder Bolan was the most gorgeous, pouting, corkscrew-haired pop star in town.
Drafting in Steve Curry as full-time bass player and Bill Legend as drummer, Bolan followed the hit single with a fairly uninspiring album, T Rex (1970), that looked back to Summer of Love folderol.

In 1968, while his contemporary David Bowie was crooning in the manner of Anthony Newley, Marc Bolan was leader of a hippie duo called Tyrannosaurus Rex, along with Steve Peregrine Took, a bongo player who had named himself after a Tolkien character.
The works gathered herein have little in common with classic T. Rex, but it's interesting to here Bolan's voice in these settings; it's as distinctive as ever, but wilder, sounding somewhere between Yoko Ono and Tiny Tim.
Title such as "Pictures of the Purple People" and "Hippy Gumbo" (an unsuccessful single released in 1966), and obscure lyrics (at one point Bolan refers to "a mac made of yeti") indicate the bygone sensibilities at work herein.

It should be stated that each of these artists put his own stamp on the genre, no matter how facile the whole scene was.
When his career went on the slide and all the other rock dinosaurs of the '70s were condemning the beginning of the British punk movement, Bolan readily embraced it: He took the Damned on tour with him and gave young upstarts (Generation X, the Jam) love on his television show (brilliantly titled Marc).
It's the only way you'll ever experience T. Rex at the height of their powers: Bolan died in an auto accident in 1977; bassist Currie took the same highway off the mortal coil in 1981; and Finn succumbed to liver failure in 2003.
