Avantgarde Music. Steve Roach: biography, discography, reviews, links

Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, disc 1 by Steve Roach
Steve Roach has had a long and lauded career in the annals of contemporary ambient and space music.
Roach has taken the disparate threads of his most recent releases and blended them together to form a seamless, awe-inspiring tapestry of drone-instilled ambient.
If Steve Roach's musical output as a whole can be compared to continents on a planet--each continent containing separate but related wildlife, plantlife, topography, and geological attributes--we must then consider disc one to be the sound of the entire planet as a living breathing totality.

Matt Howarth's Sonic Space: Steve Roach, Trance Master
Roach's live performances of electronic music have taken him far and wild: from concert halls in the United States, Canada and Europe to lava caves in the Canary Islands and volcanic craters in Mexico.
Roach's cunning compositional talent weaves these sonic tangents together, creating an earthy array of electronic textures embodied with ethereal passion by prehispanic flutes, didgeridoo, and assorted primitive percussion instruments, like clay water pots.
Roach's Arizona desert habitat was the setting and inspiration for this music, capturing that part of the day when the spell of the heat holds sway over all life and even inanimate objects.

 STEVE ROACH - PRINCE OF DRONES - Ambient - TRANCE - Electronics - EER-MUSIC.com"
A Roach concert is a primal ritual lit by candles and perfumed with incense, a mind-expanding light show, and a meditative experience, all wrapped in that trademark sound whose reverb, whether in the studio or in the performance space, seems to go on forever.
Roach himself is the opposite of the gyrating rock showman or pompous classical virtuoso; dressed in dark clothing and almost hidden behind the array of electronics, he is the wizard behind the curtain who delivers real magic.

 Life Sequence by Steve Roach
This is an interesting release, first because it is something of a departure from recent Roach material (usually deep and long droneworks or intense tribal-ritual albums), and second because it marks a return to the style of music Roach debuted with in the early eighties: sequencing.
Roach has a talent of expressing the ineffable in his music and "Destination Horizon" propels the listener forward into an unknowable future, both mysterious and welcoming.
Listeners who find Roach's classic sequencing style a past relic may be turned away by certain tracks' similarities to older works (and ambient fans who eschew Berlin School altogether will likely avoid this entirely).

Roach's electronic improvisations provide grounding in "Encounter Passage" and eerie staccato emphasis on "Isolation." There are many interesting time signatures and exotic drumbeats (particularly on "Strands" and "Isolation"), and enough dissonance to keep things from sliding into the dreaded "Yanni With Eyeliner" category.
