The Steve Rochinski Quartet : Otherwise - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
While Otherwise includes three Rochinski originals ("The Thrill of It All," "Continuation on an Afterthought," and "All the Shirts I Own"), the guitarist's main focus is material by other composers.
The guitarist's sidemen on this CD include pianist Chip Stephens, bassist Jim Stinnett, and drummer Joe Hunt; instead of using all of the musicians on all of the tracks, he leads different quartets and duos and even performs unaccompanied on some of the tunes.
Rochinski, you see, likes to keep his options open, which is why Otherwise is hardly a carbon copy of Until Further Notice...

CD Baby: STEVE ROCHINSKI: A Bird in The Hand
Rochinski, who has studied with the late Tal Farlow, plays with a sweet and resonant tone and effortlessly hip phrasing, deftly throwing in triplet runs and long strings of artificial harmonics at points where you least expect them.
Steve Rochinski is a Professor in the Harmony Department at Berklee College of Music.
Steve will be profiled in the next edition of the book The Jazz Guitar: Its Evolution, Players, and Personalities Since 1900 by Maurice Summerfield (Ashley Mark Publishing) and the 2005 Edition of Who's Who in America (Marquis Publishing).

Rochinski is clearly a worldclass player with immaculate technique, freeflowing ideas and an unwavering propensity to swing under any and all conditions.
While Rochinski seems able to do whatever he pleases, one thing he does not do is focus the spotlight on himself at the expense of his trio or quartet, and the interplay among them is exemplary.
Steve Rochinski is a formidable talent, and A Bird in the Hand is a marvelous example of his exceptional artistry.

Although not well known nationally, Steve Rochinski is someone who has commanded respect on the Boston jazz scene.
Because Rochinski studied guitar with Tal Farlow, some jazz enthusiasts might expect his playing to be more Farlow-ish.
Because Rochinski's playing and writing are as angular and intellectual as they are, listeners may not be able to fully absorb Until Further Notice...

 Steve Rochinski | Otherwise
A presence in the Northeast jazz scene, and certainly known by the students and faculty of the Berklee School Of Music, guitarist Steve Rochinski unfortunately was unable to scrape together the resources for more than a self-produced CD until recently.
Thus, Rochinski employs a rich, natural sound from his instrument, the notes clearly defined and the improvisational lines logical and focused.
A matured guitarist with full command of his instrument and musical integrity, Steve Rochinski has released an album that no doubt is a reflection of his wide-ranging interests and too-long-unrecognized talent.
