Steve Rodby: Oregon in Moscow/Liner Notes
Steve and engineer Rich Breen worked miracles, the difficulties of which Steve managed to shield from the band members in order that we could concentrate solely on the music-making.
Equipment failure and faulty maintenance, unexpected changes of orchestra personnel, bureaucratic snafus were all overcome by Steve and the wizardry of Rich.
It couldn't have been accomplished without Steve, who is first and foremost a tremendous musician who also happens to possess the skills to organize and produce such a complex project.

He is capable of painting textures and sounds that are as unexpected — sometimes you don’t even realize that it is a trumpet doing all that - as they are beautiful”.THE WAY UPthemusiciansThe recording took place over several sessions during the course of 2003 at Right Track Recording in New York City.
In particular, the way Steve is able to function on so many levels during the organization and recording of these records is very important.

It starts with a wash of sound, followed by Mays' alternating cascades of sixteenth notes that can only be heard, not described, and Rodby's thunderous bass.
Cuong Vu's trumpet slows things to a languid, behind-the-beat pace of wondrous breath control as he slides into quarter-tone holds and on-tone crescendos, echoed in the final notes.
The song has beautiful counter-phrasing by Rodby, perfectly spare note selection by Vu, triple-speed strumming by Metheny, and Mays' most melodic solo.

Collaborating with longtime associates Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass), and a host of newer PMG members, Metheny embarks on a 68-minute sonic journey.
Unlike a typical jazz suite, this music doesn't break down into movements; rather, the listener hears chapters, or parts, which segue seamlessly into one another.
