  Gracenote: Company Info
In 1995, Steve Scherf created the CDDB compact disc recognition service with partner Ti Kan as a hobby to get personal computers to display information about the CDs they were playing.
While Scherf did not major in computer science in college, he continued learning about computers by doing other students' programming homework assignments.
Scherf graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1988 with a Bachelor's degree in Math and Biology.

Gracenote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because CDs do not generally contain any digitally-encoded information about their contents (see CD-Text), Kan and Scherf devised a clever technology which identifies and looks up CDs based on TOC information stored at the beginning of each disc.
In 1998, Kan and Scherf incorporated CDDB into a privately held company with investment from Escient, a high-tech venture firm.
The maneuver was and remains controversial, because the CDDB database was and is built on the voluntary submission of CD track data by thousands of individual users, who received no compensation for their work.

Background: Mr. Steve Scherf and Mr. Ty Roberts - The World Technology Network
Steve Scherf created the CDDB service as an easy way of relating these numbers to the albums they represent, including song, album and artist names, as well as other relevant information on a CD.
Today Scherf and Roberts contribute towards the next generation of digital music and entertainment devices being developed, which include hard drive embedded devices, mobile phones and DVD devices.

Steve Scherf at Escient Inc. responded quickly by denying service, in turn, to all N2MP3 clients requesting information from the CDDB servers.
This quick action helped save the CDDB from being overrun by spurious requests, effectively eliminating the flood of bandwith caused by Proteron's errant N2MP3.
