Steve Staunton, the manager of the Republic of Ireland soccer team, was last night threatened by a man with what appeared to be a gun while standing outside the team hotel in Portmarnock in north Dublin, writes Martin Wall
Staunton was approached by the man while making a phone call outside the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links, where the Irish team is based in advance of the game against Holland tomorrow evening.
Staunton ran back into the hotel and the man was pursued by security staff, who contacted gardaí.

Irish lad Staunton played Gaelic Football as a boy, even winning a Championship medal, but he was also a footballer and he was one of a clutch of youngsters brought to Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish.
Staunton missed the start of the next season, but he came into the side for a League Cup tie against Wigan, scoring a hat-trick in the second leg, which was played at Anfield although it was technically the away tie.
Staunton continued to flourish at his new club Aston Villa and he continued to be a regular in the Republic of Ireland side, appearing in several major finals.

Staunton's contract was terminated by mutual consent in the early hours of this morning following an emergency board meeting.
Delaney defended that decision today, pointing to the fact Sir Bobby Robson had also been appointed to assist Staunton, but he also admitted the process for appointments should, in general, be left to the professionalis.
