Barbelith Underground > Comic Books > The Rise and Fall of Steve Yeowell: A Photo-Essay
There’s still — there always is, in Yeowell — a basic knack for effective composition, and some hint at the subtle expressions from earlier work, but the lines are slashed out in a rush, blocky and thick like something for a kid to colour in.
Yeowell teams up with Morrison again for the Invisibles in September 1994, and seems to recover his earlier enthusiasm: the art here, coloured by Daniel Vozzo, has the solidity and detail — in simple terms, just the care and attention — of Yeowell’s late-80s work on Phase III and Hitler.
Finally, the Zenith postscript: written by Morrison as cheeky satire, and Yeowell’s more cartoony art is appropriate in that context — but interestingly, his fl and white inks, with their solid light and shadow, their witty attention to detail hark back to the Phase II style of the late 1980s.

Yeowell was then hired by American companies and has worked on 'Batman', 'The Fantastic Four', 'The Invisibles', 'JSA' and 'Starman'.

Morrison and Yeowell cleverly recreate Victorian styles of dialogue and illustration and link Victorian aestheticism to gay culture, contemporary virtual reality, the nature of fiction and even religion.
Yeowell's stylish art evokes Victorian decadence without sacrificing clarity.
In the best comic-book tradition, Sebastian proves equally adept at hand-to-hand combat and pithy epigrams, though the latter are of far higher caliber than what superheroes deliver when dispatching their foes.

Yeowell was headhunted by American comics companies and has worked on Batman, The Fantastic Four, The Invisibles, JSA and Starman.

Yeowell's art in phase three was like a language.
And while I believe Yeowell to be well capable of repeating the high quality he shows in phase 3, he won't - because he'll never be given such awesome material to play with again.
The second run went all Harryhausen and that's never a bad thing, and the third series was one of the best things in 2k all year, and it's been a bumper year.

Steve & Grant have been in touch with me since the interview and Steve tells me that he managed to get in the cover artwork for the Titan Books reprint, which is being designed by Rian Hughes.

Graphic novel review - The Invisibles: Say You Want a Revolution - Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Jill Thompson, Dennis ...
Yeowell and Thompson do an adequate job of translating Morrison's fantasies onto the page, with occasionally stark but mostly sympathetic colouring enhancing the transition between perceived reality and wild fantasy.
This certainly isn't going to be to everyone's taste as it takes concentration and a certain amount of persistence to follow the story.
It's unlikely that you'll be much the wiser when you emerge from the end of this book, but those who like a smattering of chaos in their world will appreciate its qualities.

Having said that, there's little in them that inspires any particular desire to find out more about them, so the lack of any further development is, in our opinion, a good thing.
Yeowell's artwork is functional but lacks the background development and detail that this title initially promises.
Although enthusiasts of Morrison and Yeowell's work may find something worth reading in here, it probably isn't anything more than passing interest.

Ian Edginton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is one of the few British comic talents to follow the reverse trajectory to the one usually taken - he started with American comics and eventually ended up working for 2000 AD.
Edginton sees part of the key to his success coming from good relationships with artists, especially D'Israeli and Steve Yeowell as well as Steve Pugh and Mike Collins.
He is the writer of The Red Seas, with art by Steve Yeowell, along with some one-off serials such as American Gothic (2005).
