 Arrows Pierce Steamers' Title Hopes
The incomparable Steve Zungul's fourth goal of the day and 15th in five playoff games gave the Arrows their third straight Major Indoor Soccer League championship.
Zungul took a pass out of a crowd from Luis Alberto and, despite a valiant effort by goalkeeper Slobo Ilijevski, broke both the tie and the Steamers' hearts with one off-balance swing of his magical left leg.
The piece d' resistance of Zungul's four goals knotted the score at 4:07 into the third quarter when Slobo and two teammates appeared to have the Arrow's superstar pinned against the boards.

In the End it was Simply Zungul vs. Ilijevski
Zungul, the driveshaft of the New York Arrows' offense (108 regular-season goals) who holds exclusive rights to the MISL's most valuable player award (he has won the honor three times running), already had scored three goals and assisted on a fourth.
I just caught him (for a split second by the jersey) and he was gone, because he was in the speed." "It wasn't his mistake," said Zungul, "because a couple of other times he had come out to make the save when I had a chance to score.
He forced (Zungul) into making a good play." Making Zungul's performance seem even more fascinating was this bit of self-revelation: He was at only 70 percent capacity Sunday because of a groin injury suffered during Friday night's semifinal game.

Very interesting I learned quite a bit about the league by reading around, six players, surprisingly high attendances at around seven thousand per game average in all years, in the early years even competing in some states with mlb and the national bussiness association basketball...it pretty pathetic though that the u.s.
Zungul was every bit as dominant as Wayne Gretzky, he was simply spectacular...If indoor soccer was as popular as Hockey or the NBA in America he would be a household name.
Yes correct the whole league was homesexuals, same as the NBA in the early 1980's, same as every player who wore a uniform in the 1980's they were kind of short, therefore we were all gay...you are correct everyone who played sports in the 1980's was homesexual.

The Year in American Soccer - 1984
Rounding out the playoff contenders was Golden Bay, who relied upon the "Lord of All Indoors," Steve Zungul, for goals, but could also enjoy the outstanding goalkeeping of veteran Bob Rigby, the man who virtually invented the position of indoor goalkeeper ten years earlier.
Steve Zungul, already setting scoring records in the MISL accomplished a unique "triple", finishing as the leading goal scorer in the NASL outdoor, the NASL indoor and the MISL, all within a 12 month period!
Baltimore's Stan Stamenkovic, rescued from the hell of the moribund Memphis franchise and free of the looming shadows of Zungul and Branko Segota, who were playing in the "other" league, the "Pizza Man" led the league in scoring en route to the MVP award.

Hence, a forward, Val Tuksa, was named Defender of the Year, and scoring powerhouse Steve Zungul landed a midfielder role on the all-star team, after being named to the team as a forward in previous seasons.

History of Indoor Soccer in the USA
On the field, very little changed, though: New York Arrows continued to win championships, taking the 1980-81 and 1981-82 titles, and Steve Zungul continued to score goals at an incredible rate, netting 108 goals in 40 games in 1980-81 and adding another 103 in 1981-82.
Sockers forward Julie Veee, while not netting as many goals as his former teammate Zungul, scored 51 goals in 17 games in the 1981-82 season, averaging a hat-trick per game; even Zungul was never able to maintain that pace over the course of a season.
Along with Veee, Zungul, Segota, and Haaskivi, a handful of new stars burst upon the scene: Preki, Tatu, Dave McWilliams, and Dale Mitchell established themselves as top scorers, and Kevin Crow and Bernie James led the new wave of defensive heroes.

It was not uncommon to walk into a locker room and have the players cursing Ron Newman, their head coach, hollering: "We won despite that (expletive)!" It was a strange relationship, to be sure.
