  White Christmas
Bing's single of "White Christmas" sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and was recognized as the best-selling single in any music category for more than 50 years until 1998 when Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind," overtook it in a matter of months.
Because "White Christmas" may be the most popular American secular Christmas carol, rivaled only by "Jingle Bells," it could easily be presumed that it was treated as a star from the moment of its 1940 conception by the incomparable song writer Irving Berlin (1888-1989).
Today, the song endures not just as an icon of the national Christmas celebration but as the artistic and commercial peak of the golden age of popular song, a symbol of the values and strivings of the World War II generation, and of the saga of Jewish-American assimilation.

Three Monkeys Christmas Reborn. The creation of a consumer Christmas - Professor Steven Nissenbaum in interview.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Christmas, declared the reformed Church, was corrupted: a holiday of misbehaviours.
Nissenbaum argues that in response to this battle, capitalism transformed Christmas with a carrot and stick approach: “The stick was the criminalisation of rowdy behaviour: Begging was made illegal, and after a serious riot in NY in 1828, a professional police force created for the first time.
Christmas helped create the new consumer society because people were not in the habit of buying luxury – but the essence of the Christmas present is that it cannot be a necessity, when you are giving inside the family it needs to be something special, a luxury item.

Jesusfreakhideout.com: Steven Curtis Chapman, "Christmas Is All In the Heart" Review
Steven had become well-known for his southern-flavored pop, but as his popularity increased and his songwriting matured, Steven had begun to stray from his southern roots.
Christmas Is All In the Heart, named after a hit song from his 1995 record, features six cuts from his first Christmas project remixed especially for this release, accompanied by six brand new Christmas recordings.
Christmas Is All In the Heart is still better than its predecessor and still has enough great music on it to be worth the reasonable $7.95 price tag.

Jesusfreakhideout.com: Steven Curtis Chapman, "All I Want For Christmas" Review
When Christmas Is All In The Heart was released two years ago, the album was in high demand and became sold out rather quickly, making it near impossible for fans who missed it to get a hold of those new recordings.
The six new songs from Christmas Is All In The Heart are all present and accounted for here, in addition to six more new recordings (which, ironically, is what I had suggested would be a great idea in my 2003 review).
The Christmas classic "Angels from the Realms of Glory" is given a complete contemporary recomposition, and is followed by the wonderful seasonal favorite "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." A brand new Chapman original, the title track, is a sensitive and emotional storytelling of an orphan's desire for a family on Christmas.

It was a Monday morning in early December a few years ago, and I was in no mood for Steven's quizzical look as he peeked in from his room next door.
As deep as Steven's love of Christmas was his ignorance of why the holiday worked me into such a lather.
But I had to admit that while I'd praised Steven for learning what my holidays mean, locked in my identity as a minority victim, I hadn't realized that I owed Steven what he'd given me: a willingness to set aside assumptions and listen.

Although he was appalled at some of the abuses that attached themselves to Christmas (that at least sounds up to date!), John Calvin nevertheless called for a ‘moderate course of keeping Christ’s birthday’.
As long as we remember that the date is arbitrary, and that Christmas is not about trees, tinsel and tomfoolery, we won’t go wrong.
Nor is Christmas primarily about angels, shepherds and wise men — though these are all mentioned in the New Testament story.
