Stephen Hawking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hawking is the Lucasian professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton), and a fellow of Gonville and Caius College.
Hawking was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 1982, and became a Companion of Honour in 1989.
Hawking was in the news in July 2004 for presenting a new theory about fl holes which goes against his own long-held belief about their behaviour, thus losing a bet he made with Kip Thorne and John Preskill of Caltech.

Hawking is Lucasian professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Isaac Newton), and a fellow of Gonville and Caius College.
Hawking is famous for his oft-made statement, "When I hear of Schrödinger's cat, I reach for my gun." This was a deliberately ironic paraphrase of Hermann Göring's anti-intellectual quote, "When I hear the word 'culture', I reach for my Browning", which itself was from a play by German playwright and Nazi Poet Laureate, Hanns Johst.
Hawking was in the news in July 2004 for presenting a new theory about fl holes which goes against his own long-held belief about their behaviour, thus losing a bet he and Kip Thorne made with John Preskill, a particle physicist.

A brief history of Stephen Hawking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Hawking has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's disease, a neuromuscular disease that progressively weakens muscle control.
So Hawking – among a group of theoretical physicists -- has been on a quest to come up with a theory of quantum gravity that would incorporate both theories – the theory of everything (TOE) – which would solve the problem of what caused the universe to start expanding.
Hawking predicts we'll have the TOE in the next 20 years.

Steven Hawking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Steven William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England.
In the late 1960's, Steven proved that if general relativity is true and the Universe is expanding, a irregularity must have occurred at the birth of the Universe.
Hawking has several books, but his most prestigious feat may be "a Brief History of Time", which was published in 1988.

New Scientist Breaking News - Hawking concedes black hole bet
Hawking previously argued that the intense gravitational fields inside the fl hole were unravelling the laws of quantum mechanics, possibly sending the information shooting off into other universes.
Hawking reached his solution by considering what happened to fl holes of all different shapes and sizes after an infinite amount of time.
Hawking also failed to completely convince Kip Thorne, a physicist from the California Institute of Technology, and his betting partner, that he had resolved the paradox.

 Steven Hawking
Steven put up an astrological prediction that he had downloaded from the Internet, and pointed out that it was quite general and vague.
Steven then discussed whether information gets lost in a Black Hole, never to be retrieved, and pointed out that this question, unresolved at present, has important consequences for determinism.
One described how Steven scrolls down a list of words on the computer screen in front of him, picking out the ones he needs to make a sentence, which is then played out in that machine-like voice with which we all now identify him.

Why Stephen Hawking's Cosmology Precludes a Creator
Stephen Hawking has famously said "there is no place for a Creator." However, there is little or no actual arguments to be found either in their technical or popular writings to support such "atheistic" claims.
Hawking also recently emphasizes that the universe "would quite literally be created out of nothing: not just out of the vacuum, but out of absolutely nothing at all, because there is nothing outside the universe."
Hartle and Hawking write in their original paper: "In the case of the Universe we would interpret the fact that the wave function [the probability amplitude] can be finite and nonzero at the zero three geometry as allowing the possibility of topological fluctuations of the three-geometry."

Stephen Hawking, The Big Bang, and God
Hawking has made his reputation by investigating, in great detail, one particular set of problems: the singularity and horizons around fl holes and at the beginning of time.
Hawking's first major work was published with Roger Penrose, a physicist very famous in his own right, and George Ellis, during the period 1968-1970.
Isabel Hawking was a member of the Communist Party in England in the 1930's, and her son has carried a good bit of that intellectual baggage right through his life.

New Scientist Breaking News - Hawking cracks black hole paradox
Hawking's argument was that the intense gravitational fields of fl holes somehow unravel the laws of quantum physics.
Now, it seems that Hawking too has an answer to the conundrum and the physics community is abuzz with the news.
Hawking requested at the last minute that he be allowed to present his findings at the 17th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation in Dublin, Ireland.

Hawking is not only one of the most important physicists and cosmologists of the 20th century, he's also something of a medical miracle in that he's survived almost 40 years with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Hawking is now 59 and though confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak except through a computer-generated voice box that he controls with one finger, he is a huge draw and has popularized hard science.

Why Steven Hawking's Cosmology Precludes a Creator
In the case at hand, the probability is for the existence of the three-dimensional spatial slice S (the "three-geometry S" in Hartle and Hawking's parlance), from which the probability of the other states of the universe can be calculated.
Hartle and Hawking derive is that of an approximately smooth sphere (like the earth) that is much smaller than the head of a pin.
He says Hawking and Hartle "calculate the probability for the universe to emerge from a state of 'nothing,' as in Alex Vilenkin's model, to the state of 'something.'"42 Pagels earlier recounts Alex Vilenkin's account of "nothing" in Vilenkin's first quantum-gravity model.
