Steven Isserlis/Dénes Várjon @ Wigmore Hall, London : concert review
If Steven Isserlis has a weakness, it is that his playing is inclined to lack volume, the cause of which rests, one suspects, with the instrument rather than the technique of the person playing it.
Nevertheless it was hard to fault Isserlis, whose fiendish double stops and devilishly difficult triplet arpeggios in the second and third movements respectively were delivered with absolute aplomb.
With Isserlis and Várjon on top form, each character piece was notable for its distinctive portrayal of disparate moods, from the rollicking comedy of the opening Mit Humor to the tragic dance-of-death-like third movement.

Steven Isserlis @ West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge : concert review
She was perfectly matched by Isserlis, the two always blending splendidly when accompanying the piano or playing in unison.
The timbre of Isserlis' opening cello solo, played entirely on the instrument's lower three strings, set an appropriately melancholic mood, and his subsequent combination with Fujita to provide the accompaniment for Haywood was almost more exciting than the melody itself.
Isserlis tackled the notorious difficulties of the Arpeggione Sonata with consummate ease, producing a clear and delicious tone.

Isserlis is well equipped to convey this kind of music visually: tossing his mop of Simon Rattle-like hair, throwing his bow around, raising his head heavenward and turning the cello away from his body in ethereal passages, and entirely removing his left hand from the instrument when playing on open strings.
Isserlis' physical style was merely a sign that he was absorbed in his confidence in the music.
Isserlis presented the theme plainly, without the note-bending pathos I've heard on record, and tackled the five faster, complex variations vigorously with crisp, strong attacks while Hough provided percussive rolling rhythms on the piano.

Steven Isserlis played the closing section of the slow movement of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, D821, as though some profundity of musical thought in the remarkable chord changes Schubert writes here had reduced his cello bow to immobility.
Isserlis and Hough played the whole sonata like this: the fluent ease and spontaneity of the opening theme, the affectionate, clumsy rhythmic dances of the last.
For me, it embodied an ideal of chamber music where musical ideas are continually born anew, unfettered by any sense of contrivance or premeditation, yet the whole forms an unbroken line of concentration from beginning to end.
