  Dear Catharine, Dear Taylor
Taylor Peirce was 40 years old when he left his wife and family to enlist in the 22nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Taylor’s letters tell of battles and camp life, drilling and training, brave and cowardly commanders, troop morale, raucous amusements like music and gambling, delinquent paymasters, and his own moral code and motivation for fighting.
Most of all, her letters convey her frustration and aching loneliness in Taylor’s absence, as well as her fears for his life, even as other women were becoming widowed by the war.

Steven Taylor has analysis of this weird decision.
Moneyed special interests, be they corporations, unions, or Indian tribes, will always find a way to line the pockets of those in power, and the longer a politician stays in power, the greater the chance that he or she will succumb to graft.
Conservatives have talked about a few reforms such as the balanced budget amendment and term limits in the past, but a more practical change would be to end the process of amending bills with unrelated pieces of legislation that call for new spending.

Businessman-Mayor Turns Pol by Steven Malanga
Standing in front of a banner that described New York as the city of opportunity, Bloomberg presented his audience with a laundry list of accomplishments and offered an even longer list of predictable programs and projects his administration was cooking up.
But the business that Mayor Bloomberg outlined mostly entailed public-sector projects—the kind of stuff that politicians who have little faith in the private sector like to point to as “economic development” but which rarely accomplish much except to redistribute tax dollars ineffectively around an economy.
Except for a brief reference to his plans for another homeowners tax rebate, in yesterday’s speech Bloomberg made no mention of any efforts to restrain or cut the city’s job-smothering taxes.

ProfessorBainbridge.com: Once More into the Iraq Breach   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The source of my frustration, as Steven Taylor put it, however, is that the Iraq situation (a) makes it harder for Bush to turn around and start moving the domestic conservative agenda and (b) makes it less likely that the Congressional GOP will start leading on that agenda on its own.
All of which is why I don't buy Patrick Carver's claim that the failure to seize the conservative moment and related problems I've identified are "independent from the situation in Iraq." The idea that Iraq isn't hurting (or, at least, going to hurt) the conservative cause is just whistling past the graveyard.
Yet, even though Steven Taylor's right that some things got done, it still seems to me that we have done relatively little to seize the potential of the moment to advance an agenda some of us have been thinking about and hoping for since Reagan came to office.
