Based on Stephen Vincent Benet's short story pitting the legendary Massachusetts senator against Satan himself, the film's ride to the silver screen was a bumpy one.
Though much of it is the original 1991 commentary, Eder did return to the studio to freshen and update his remarks, talking, for example, about actor Jeff Corey, who plays Grange organizer Tom Sharp in the movie and provided Eder with much insight into its making and who died in 2002.
And while one has to wonder about the quality of a remake that would replace the magnificence of Walter Huston with lightweight Jennifer Love Hewitt in the role of the devil, at least Baldwin's reading reflects a genuine affection for the story.
