 History of Stewart
Stewart Air Force Base was home to the 4603rd Air Base Group, which had the overall responsibility of maintaining and running the base.
Stewart International Airport is the nation’s second largest airport in total area.
Stewart was also home to the First Air Force Reserve Region Headquarters, which was responsible for more than 10,000 reservists assigned to units in New York, New Jersey and the New England states.

 Guarding the National Guard
The guard bases New York is trying to protect are: Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton, Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse and Niagara Falls Air National Guard Base.
Guard units are based and drill at 59 state-owned armories and the five air bases, as well as at the Army’s Fort Drum near Watertown and the Air Force Reserve base at Niagara Falls.
The National Guard in New York stayed close to its recruiting goals last year and plans construction projects at several armories while closing one.

 Stewart Air National Guard Base
The day-to-day base population is approximately 660 personnel; however, one weekend each month the population surges to 1600 in response to Air National Guard drills.
In 1956 the 331st Fighter Interceptor Squadron was transferred from Stewart Air Force Base in New York to Webb AFB in Texas to defend the southern United States border on air intercept missions.
The Stewart family donated 220 acres of land to West Point in 1942 for that purpose, and later that year Stewart Airfield was dedicated as the "Wings of West Point".

The Air Force, saying it must secure space to protect the nation from attack, is seeking President Bush's approval of a national-security directive that could move the United States closer to fielding offensive and defensive space weapons, according to White House and Air Force officials.
Air Force officials said yesterday that the directive, which is still in draft form, did not call for militarizing space.
Another Air Force space program, nicknamed Rods From God, aims to hurl cylinders of tungsten, titanium or uranium from the edge of space to destroy targets on the ground, striking at speeds of about 7,200 miles an hour with the force of a small nuclear weapon.

Franklin Rodriguez, 35, and Master Sgt. John Fong, 36, of the Air National Guard were arrested Tuesday when their C-5A “Galaxy” cargo plane returned from Germany after an official mission to deliver training supplies to the Republic of Georgia.
Rodriguez had been in the Guard for 10 years while Fong had been employed for seven years, he said.
