  Stewart Holbrook
Holbrook's writings reflect his sympathy for and romanticizing of loggers and other workers, underdogs, visionaries and fanatics, his interest in the humorous and offbeat, and his penchant for puncturing myths and poking fun at stuffed-shirts and hypocrites from all walks of life.
Holbrook was an early forest conservationist and an advocate of sustained yield forestry.
Holbrook was the patron and fictive alter-ego of the remarkable Mr.

For instance, Holbrooks tells us of outlaw Jim Turnow who he describes as the most crafty and dangerous man ever to roam the timbered reaches of the Pacific Northwest- a cold blooded killer who had a reign of terror in Grays Harbor.
This is an anthology of some of Holbrook's mid-1900's articles about the development of the NW around the turn of the last century.
Holbrook's prose is easy-reading but carries well-researched along with humor and style.

 An Interview with Brian Booth
Holbrook eventually said that his mission in life was to write about the figures in American history who had been ignored or badly treated.
Holbrook seems to me to have anticipated their writings somewhat by dealing with what the pioneers and loggers did to the environment, looking at the West from the standpoint of the working person, and exploring parts of that life that usually get swept under the rug.
Holbrook spoke at the Oregon Historical Society in 1940, saying that Oregon had a wonderful opportunity to exploit and market its history, to the rest of the country, as well as to educate its citizens.

 Sustained Resource
Holbrook himself is a victim of time, as Brian Booth, the editor of this collection explains to us in the introduction.
Indeed, he took (in the words of Lucius Beebe) "intense pleasure in the delusion that Portland...was a sink of vice and licentiousness." Holbrook's loggers were a breed apart from mankind: the roughest, toughest, rip-snortinest beings that ever did rise from the ground.
What Holbrook excelled at, however, was in showing that even the most exceptional cases he chronicled were the most normal; that it was, underneath the red flannel shirt of the woodsman, the finery of Miss Fern Hobbs, and the grimy nakedness of prophet Joshua the Second, the beating heart of an ordinary human.

The Logging Industry Comes to Washington
According to Stewart Holbrook, author of Holy Old Mackinaw, at the turn of the century "...the federal government reported that the remote State of Washington had crashed overnight into lumber supremacy with a production of four billion feet, or almost as much as Wisconsin and Minnesota put together".
Holbrook continues: "When the first loggers saw the fir that grew along the banks of the Columbia and around Puget Sound they said there couldn't be timber that big and tall.
Holbrook tells of Cyrus Walker, head of the Pope and Talbot mill, who built "...a New England mansion which had no peer in Washington, Territory and State." It overlooked the mill and harbor, with a War of 1812 relic bronze canon from Boston in the front yard.

Disposable Lit: The Golden Age of Quackery
According to Stewart Holbrook, it was the century immediately preceding the enactment of the Federal Pure Food and Drug Act, which went into effect January 1, 1907.
Through it all, Holbrook maintains a delightful authorial voice of dry academic wit in describing the enthusiasm of pitchmen and patients and the creativity with which local laws and regulations were dodged.
But looking back and seeing that as much time has passed since the writing of Holbrook's book as the end of the era he chronicles, I can see that those same impulses to defraud one's fellow man are as much alive and well as they were in the days of the itinerant medicine show.

 TIME.com: Logger's Life -- Apr. 4, 1938 -- Page 1
Last week Stewart Holbrook covered a lot of the ground in a breezy volume called Holy Old Mackinaw which placed most emphasis on the industry's picturesque history and its hard-boiled camp followers.
Author Holbrook's warmest passages are given over to descriptions of the red-light districts, skid roads and loggers' saloons that have flourished from Bangor to Eureka, Calif. Result is that Holy Old Mackinaw is a puzzler, with solid bits of unfamiliar industrial history sandwiched between slightly sophomoric tributes to vanished vice.
Author Holbrook's loggers get into so many fights, frequent so many bawdy houses, sing so many logger songs and swear so many round oaths (of which Holy Old Mackinaw is one) that readers may wonder when they found time to cut down all those trees.

The late Stewart Holbrook, a leading popularized of history a decade and more ago, was wont to substitute color for analysis.
As one critic put it: "Hols would remember that when a man stood up to make a speech in Cutbank, Montana, his pants fell down, and then he would forget what the fellow had to say." Yet, whatever his faults, Holbrook wrote carefully researched, coherent accounts firmly set in the context of the times.
