When I was on Stewart Island the splendid gum trees on the road to Ackers Point were fruiting and the kaka were feeding on the gum nuts.
The Stewart Island brown kiwi is larger than the two other sub-species found in the North and South islands and it is now believed that the first kiwi to be collected and described was probably a local bird taken to Sydney by returning sealers.

Stewart Island has about 300 full time residents - we saw just about all of their homes in the main residential area of Oban as we pulled into the harbor.
But other islands that have been overrun, like Ulva Island in one of the bays at Stewart Island, have been cleared of rats by extensive trapping and poisoning.
We loved Stewart Island - the weather is often crummy, it is a long way from anywhere, there isn't much of a nightlife other than a couple of restaurants and a couple of pubs, but it is a terrific part of New Zealand.

The purpose of my visit to Stewart Island was to see a kiwi and to complete one of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Rakiura Track.
Stewart Island is famous for its mud but on the Rakiura Track boardwalks have been built over most of the offending areas.
The roads are so limited on the island that it doesn't take very long at all to get to the end of the road, whatever direction you're travelling in.

The 350 hectares of the Snares Group to the south of Stewart Island is home to an estimated 8,000,000 muttonbirds and many of the smaller islands off Stewart Island once had correspondingly dense populations.
Spotted shags, little shags and Stewart Island shags are all found here together with the blue shag which goes under the rather unusual local name of the bravo duck.
They mostly nest on the smaller islands and stacks offshore and their nesting places are clearly visible under the white coating of guano which has usually killed all vegetation in the immediate area.

After almost being exterminated in the sealing days, the seals are again on the increase and the staff at the salmon farm on the island are now complaining that the nets around their ponds have been ripped by seals trying to get at the fish inside.
Codfish is one of the few islands with nesting populations of Cook’s petrel, or titi, and over the years these had been reduced to very low numbers by the weka.
For the sake of the titi, as well as to help the kakapo's chances of breeding on Codfish Island, the weka were removed and many were released on Stewart Island.

The original Maori name, Te Punga o Te Waka a Maui positions Stewart Island firmly at the heart of Maori mythology.

We had barely more than 48 hours on Stewart Island - we arrived on the 9.30am ferry from Bluff, and were leaving on the 3pm ferry two days later.
There were also bellbirds, red- and yellow-crowned parakeets, fantails, and a Stewart Island Robin (Touttouwai) which happily investigated when we scratched up some soil.
Coming back to the main island, we were pointed at a sea lion on the beach only a hundred metres or so away from the jetty, so we walked over and took a close look from the track just above.
