Elizabeth, the 10th Countess of Sutherland, succeeded her brother John by "infeftment" of 1515, resigning the earldom to her eldest son Alexander, the ancestor of the family of Gordon, Earls of Sutherland.
John Gordon, the 11th Earl of Sutherland and his wife were assassinated by his aunt Isabelle Sinclair, the widow of a Sutherland cadet, at Helmsdale Castle in 1567 in an attempt to gain the Earldom and estates for her own son who was second heir.
Sutherland was confined to the few pockets of clansmen immediately subjected to the survivors of the old line.

Malcolm Ross, fifth of Pitcalnie, was the rightful heir to Balnagowan, but Lady (Anne Stewart) Ross had schemed in 1685 with her brother Earl Alexander Stewart of Moray to transfer title and estate to Francis Stewart.
Munro Ross, seventh of Pitcalnie, had his claim as an "heirs male" successor to the Earldom of Ross sustained by the Court of Session and the House of Lords, but it appears that no decision was reached.
The chiefship of Ross and the armorial dignities were transferred to David Campbell Ross, eldest son of the late Sheriff Charles Campbell Ross, Q.C., of the cadet branch house of Shandwick.

Easter Ross emerged as the stronghold of Clan Ross, and it is believed that the first Earl, Malcolm Macbeth, who lived in the early twelfth century, allied his family to O'Beolan of the great Irish royal house of Tara, by the marriage of his daughter to an O'Beolan priest.
He led the men of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, where his youngest son Sir Walter de Ross was killed.
The Earls of Ross after the O'Beolans were the Leslies, Sir John Stewart, (an annexation of the title by James I from 1424 until 1427), the MacDonalds, and a forfeiture of the title to the crown in 1476 until Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley was created Earl of Ross in 1565 by Elizabeth I of England.
