Steyr ACR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the Steyr design proved effective, as did most of the weapons submitted, the entire ACR program was ended as none of the entrants managed to achieve performance 100% better than the M16A2, the baseline for a successful ACR weapon.
The Steyr ACR has some superficial resemblance to the Steyr AUG, although it is rounder and the barrel is covered for almost its entire length, as opposed to the AUG where much of the barrel was exposed.
Like the AUG the ACR is a bullpup design with the 24 round magazine located quite close to the buttstock of the gun.

The reason that the ACR should be chosen in the Advanced Combat Rifle Trials is the Steyr Mannlicher entry redefines combat effectiveness through maximum hit probability under battlefield stress, through the year 2000 and beyond.
Steyr in presenting its ACR system is the only system that balances human engineering and weapons design with consideration of cost and near term availability to offer a quantum improvement over the M16 A2.
The Steyr ACR is designed for ambidextrous use to include the magazine release, safety, and cartridge ejection from the bottom of the weapon.

The Steyr ACR was built as an attempt to revive the fleschette ammunition concept, first tried in the 1960s during US Army SPIW program.
Steyr ACR is built around a specially designed cartridge of nominal caliber of 5.56mm.
Due to high velocity, Steyr ACR had good killing power and armour piercing capablities, and due to the low weight of the projectile recoil was low.

It is thought, however, that the ACR is seeking a short-range air defence solution against helicopters and other low-flying slower airborne targets to protect mechanised and infantry operating in high risk theatres.
Steyr Consortium's officials, however, acknowledged that they chose to withdraw that portion of the bid because they were not satisfied that in the overall vehicle package configuration as specified by the Czech MoD, the turret met the company's stringent safety policy.
A number of ACR sources have openly stated that they actually preferred the PIRANHA design, considering it to be not only the world's standard with some 8,000 platforms in service with armies all around the world, but also a preferable weight category, and offered at a competitive price.

One quick observation - other than the looks of the ACR, what other qualities are there that lead you to suggest the ACR or the G-36.
So ACR is not much different than many of the other bullpup designs.
Although I dont doubt the fact that the G-36 is a good rifle, I would stick with Steyr AUG since it is in wide use in addition to being a tried and tested weapon in combat.

Shoko was lagging behind Anna and Uni as they blew threw the front gate, partially because of the weight of the Steyr Anti-Cyborg Rifle she had slung over her shoulder, but mostly because they'd assigned her to fire support, a role which required her to keep some distance.
Not fully braced this time, the recoil was enough to stagger even her for a moment, but the effect on the cyberdroid was far more dramatic as much of what was left of its chest exploded into shrapnel.
She tried to bring the ACR around to bear on it, but it fired before she could and she yelped in pain as the particle beam struck her square in the chest.

Colt's ACR is most the conservative, being merely a flattop M16-variant with an improved hydraulic buffer, a more ergonomic collapsible stock, and the muzzle brake/compensator/flash hider assembly designed by Reed Knight.
Steyr's ACR outwardly resembles their flagship AUG family; however, the internal mechanism of their ACR is quite radical.

If the gun can be ready to fire with the breech in position, then the lock time wouldn't be affected, it would just be a matter of the firing pin.
In the Steyr, pulling the trigger starts the process where the breech moves up inline with the barrel.

McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company (MDHC) was slated to enter a third fléchette-firing ACR prototype; however, it reportedly rejected for "technical issues." L. James Sullivan was responsible for the weapon's design, based on Hughes' '70s-era "Lockless" weapon and cartridge system.
Although most of the ACR trial results are still either classified or limited distribution, it is known that the AAI and Steyr fléchette cartridges were considered to be less accurate than their conventional projectile rivals.
However, none of the ACR candidates were considered to offer a large enough hit probability over the standard M16A2 to warrant further development or adoption.

April [1989]: The five submitted ACR designs are narrowed to four by Aberdeen's Combat Systems Test Agency.

While the light fléchette/sabot combination allow for the very high cyclic rate to remain controllable, both Steyr and AAI have limited their designs to three round bursts.
