Thus in the late 1990's and the advent of illuminated optics, IR laser designators which could only be seen during the night Steyr made a couple of significant changes to the Steyr aug design.
Some ADI augs have been sold in the USA but it is kind of confusing weather the assembly of these recievers into a rifle is legal or not.
The trigger guard of the AUG is large and open allowing for use in cold weather conditions where gloves may be worn.

Although the Steyr desgn proved effective, as did most of the weapons submitted, the entire ACR program was ended as none of the entrants managed to achieve performance 100% better than the M16A2, the baseline for a successful ACR weapon.
The Stery ACR has some superficial resemblance to the Steyr AUG, although it is rounder and the barrel is covered for almost it's entire length, as opposed to the AUG where much of the barrel was exposed.
Like the AUG the ACR is a bullpup design with the 24 round magazine located quite close to the buttstock of the gun.

The AUG is an ambidextrous rifle as the bolt is replaceable and the ejection port may be moved to either side of the receiver.
The AUG functions in a gas-operated, semi-automatic firing mode (in selective-fire configuration, it is the standard arm of the Austrian army).

The AUG was designed for and adopted by the Austrian military.
I was able to strip and reassemble the Aug off by heart after one lesson on stripping, and most of the other recruits were in the same position.
And as far as misfires go, the Aug has a drop safety mechanism in the trigger mechanism, but the drill instructors gave a strong impression that you shouldn't bet your life on it.

I was involved with the trails between the steyr and M16A2.
If that means losing local jobs so be it as the guys carrying this stuff could lose theres if the gear is not right!I had no faith whatso ever in any issue gear and in fact spent 3,500 dollars jusr equipping myself with off the shelf gear to operate properly.
Your comment on allready knowing the rifle refering to the A! is spot on one reason we used as well.As to the steyr being just as good let me example a few more problems that underlie it inadequacies as a service rifle.

ADI produces it under license, along with the Steyr AUG (F88).
Anyone who has used the Aug (super ergonomic, barrel as long as a standard M-16A2, and a great integrated scope) then returned to our standard-issue piece of crap M-16 family is embarrassed.
I hear the main reason people don't like bullpup configurations like the Aug is that it makes it harder to change magazine, especially while prone.

The M16 was the predecessor of the Steyr with regards a dedicated Assault rifle in the New Zealand Army.
Like the Steyr AUG, the Groza allows for various components to be interchanged allowing the different configurations to be utilised with minimal fuss in the field.
The Steyr ACR is what is considered in modern military arms manufacture as a "Advanced Combat Rifle" which is intended as a break away from conventional ideas on small arms.

Well, the British Army - and presumably all Steyr AUG users - having been relying on optical sights for over 20 years, with no obvious problems that I'm aware of.

Production commenced on the Australian version (the F88) of the AUG STEYR in the late 1980's with the first deliveries to the Australian Army in 1989.
The SAF also produced non-military items which include various forgings for other Government institutions, Borg Warner gear box parts, movie projector parts, sewing machines, Mixmasters, spanners, golf irons, sheep shears, and numerous other minor parts for a vast range of commodities.

The Australian built AUG has been used in New Zealand for 20 years and has suffered from fogging optics, junk magazines, a barrel that can not sustain a reasonable rate of automatic rifle fire and fallible safety mechanisms.
Australia's Lithgow Arsenal may indeed be having problems with building integrated optics for it's F88 clone licensed through Steyr, and I've heard they're nowhere near as high-quality as the Swarovski-made optics that are made with the same craftsmanship as you'd expect coming from one of Europe's premier jewelry houses.
That may be a foot in the door for FN or Colt to peddle M16 variant replacements, or possibly for the Canadian firm of Diemaco to sell their C8 version of the M16 family to the Brits instead.

Interesting enough, METALSTORM LTD. is developing alone another kind of similar weapon, called the HEM (Hybrid Electro-Mechanical combat system) which is an ADI F88 (Australian license-made Steyr AUG) with overbarrel, tube-fed semi-automatic grenade launcher, see the picture attached.
The HEM is not going to have an expensive Fire Control System on it, simply a built-in microchip system to control the grenades detonation.

Ill say it before and Ill say it again, one of the things that sets INF apart is the dedication to getting all of the firearms working as they do in real life, its amazing and the team deserves kudos for its hard work and research.
I actually happened across this thread in a google search for information about the F88 and the Steyr AUG. Sorry to bring it back from the dead, but I was wondering, has anyone heard of the new US carbine design, the XM-8?
The c7 and c7a1 we use in canada is sufficient and quite tough internally thanks to diemaco but still seems clunky to me. Would be nicer to have a modernized famas g2 or a F88 that had different sighting options.

The riflemen and Demo guys are equipped with the Steyr F88 and I have given the Sniper the L96A1.
I have kept the support guys with the M249, as this weapon is closer to the minima MG than the MG3 is.
