STEYR SCOUT RIFLE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Today's military scout would be far better equipped to meet with, and destroy, the enemy in "shoot and scoot" scenarios armed with an M4, Steyr AUG or Kalashnikov than a short-barreled bolt-action.
With four front locking lugs (the Steyr SSG featured rear locking lugs), an important feature of the SBS is a safety ring that is an integral part of the lock bushing.
Chronograph results obtained during a recent Steyr Scout Rifle writers' seminar held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico were as follows: Federal 168-grain BTHP 308M, 2,600 fps; Homady 165-grain Lite Mag, 2,785 fps; Homady 150-grain Lite Mag, 2,834 fps; and American Eagle 150-grain FMJ, 2,855.

Personal Observations on the Steyr Scout
The Scout rifle is based upon Steyr's new SBS 96 (Safe Bolt System) which completely encloses the bolt head and extractor with a ring to prevent gas blow-by in the event case rupture.
One gun writer claimed the the Scout is too light and kicks terribly--worse than his 300 magnum.Weights are the factory specifications, plus 1 pound for scope and rings, and 4 ounces for a sling, where the rifles were not factory furnished with them.
A custom built scout rifle from one of the big name 'smiths will set you back anywhere from $2300 to $3000 or more and usually entails a wait of one to two years before it is in your hands.

 Steyr Scout Tactical Elite
The original concept of the Steyr scout was to fill Jeff Coopers "scout concept" for a rifle.
After success with their scout rifle, they decided a couple of years ago to develop a tactical version of this rifle.
At the center of the Scout rifle is the SBS (Safe Bolt System) which is a different action then the rest of the Steyr line, and it was designed by Ulrich Zedrosser.

The Tactical Scout differs from the basic variant mostly in the bolt area: it has matte fl bolt finish with oversized bolt handle, instead of basic polished steel bolt finish and hunting style bolt handle.
As a consequence, the nickel-plated trigger on the Steyr Scout Rifle is smooth on the front edge and serrated at the rear so it can be more easily pressed forward when it is installed in a single-set mechanism available only in Europe.
The Scout is mounted on the barrel, in front of the receiver.

 Steyr Scout Rifle
All those genuine riflemen to whom I have introduced the various scout prototypes have been completely carried away by the delightful usefulness of the weapon--generally referred to as "friendliness"--but there aren't many riflemen around, and many of those are too specialized in their particular activities to understand the virtues of a truly general-purpose instrument.
The Steyr Scout is now with us, and you can order your own copy for delivery in May. Its unique features must be enjoyed to be appreciated in full, but they are there, and the first time you press that superb trigger you will be sold.
In this connection, the Steyr Scout is no more useful off the bench than a conventional weapon, but it is far superior on the snapshot--without losing anything on the bench.

Scout Rifles - Looking at the Scout Concept
Since the Steyr Scout has appeared on the market there has been a lot of talk about it, and about possibly using it, or a rifle designed on the scout concept, as the spotter's weapon.
I have also taken the Steyr Scout to Saskatchewan this fall with a 1.5-5X20 Leupold scope mounted in QDW rings in the conventional position over the action.
He has been a strong advocate of the scout rifle and the scout concept, and has invested quite a bit into it via his rifles as seen above, yet he is not blind to the shortcomings.

Replace the Robar with the Steyr Scout? - BeyondUnreal Forums
Steyr Scout and Robar RC50 are totally different in both physical specifications and designed purposes -- replacing RC50 with Steyr Scout seems to be irrelevant.
Another fact: Scout Rifles are not designed to meet the ultra-high accuracy requirement demanded by dedicated sniper rifles, not because they can't but because they aren't for that purpose in the first place.
I think it would be good to replace the Robar with the Steyr Scout because the Robar is not good for balance in INF and its real duty to knock out armored targets isnt possible with the current unreal engine.

Modern Firearms - Sniper Rifles - Steyr AMR / IWS 2000
Main targets for AMR are light armoured vehicles, helicopters, installations such as radar cabins, missile launchers, fuel tanks etc. To achieve desired effective range of at least 1000 meters, Steyr engineers first decided to use APDS (armour piercing, discarding sabot), or sub-caliber, ammunition.
Development started from 12.7mm cartridges, and later Steyr developed a 14.5mm APFSDS (Arnour percing, fin stabilised, discarding sabot) ammunition in 14.5mm caliber and built few prototypes with smooth bores and semi-automatic actions, called Steyr AMR 5075.
This system is called Steyr IWS 2000 (Infantry Weapon System 2000) and currently is probably in Adsvanced Development status or ready for adoption.

Anyone have a Savage scout? - THR
I've read a couple of comments Jeff Cooper made about other "Pseudo Scout" rifles, but never anything like "abortion scout." If you review all the writings in "Cooper's Commentaries" since the introduction of the Steyr Scout, I think you'll find he was not 100% happy with their execution, either.
The original scout rifles of which he wrote--The little Mannlicher, the aperture sighted Winchester carbine, the prototype Scout 1 - - - All wore iron sights, none had a bipod, and only one of the three had clip loading.
I wouldn't call the Savage an abortion scout, or anything else like that, it meets the vast majority of imporant scout requirements, and is a very affordable alternative.
