Stick shaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A stick shaker is a mechanical device connected to the controls of an airliner (also other types of aircraft such as bizjets) in order to warn the pilots that they are close to stalling the aircraft.
In larger aircraft (especially in T-tailed jets where a stall is often impossible to recover from - see deep stall), the stick shaker will eventually pull the controls right out of the pilot's hands to push the nose down, if need be.
In the latter case the device is often referred to as a "kicker" or "stick-pusher", although it is often the same device internally.

The control stick extends vertically from the floor of the aircraft and is located between the pilot's legs.
Based on this, it was determined that mounting the shaker on the forward face of the control stick would eliminate the possibility of control interference.
A forward mounting position will prevent the shaker from contacting the pilot (as it may with an aft or side mounting), and the range of motion of the stick will prevent the shaker from contacting the dash of the aircraft.

The mechanical stick shaker operates on data provided by the angle-of-attack (AOA) system to warn the pilot 4-12 knots prior to wing stall with mild agitation of the control stick.
The MP relaxed back stick pressure to stop the stick shaker, increased back stick pressure to re-establish a proper glide path and resumed a final approach airspeed of approximately 163 knots.
Per MP testimony, this series of stick shaker activation and recoveries occurred at least five times on final, resulting in a stair-stepped final glide path.

The stick shaker was set at an AOA effective for low altitudes but at too high a value for cruise.
If AOA or AOA margin to stick shaker were to be used as the first and primary focus of the flight crew during windshear escape or terrain avoidance procedures, extremely high pitch attitudes could be reached before stall warning if the maneuver is entered with sufficient speed.
AOA margin to stick shaker, whether shown with the PLI or the AOA display, is a secondary reference during this part of the maneuver, not the primary target.

The Airbus models with pitch axis augmentation (A320 and beyond) there is no stick shaker in the normal, full-up mode of the flight control system.
Stick shakers are intended to give the pilot warning that the airplane is approaching a stall condition.
The Airbus philosophy is to limit angle-of-attack well before stall such that their airplanes cannot be flown much closer to stall that the point where the stick shaker would fire on othre airplanes.

He then increased the pitch attitude until the stick shaker again activated, and continued to increase the pitch attitude to the stall angle-of-attack.
The evidence from this accident demonstrates that inadequacies in the use of the stick shaker as a primary indicator for angle-of-attack limited the first officer's ability to obtain the maximum climb performance possible from the airplane when it was most needed.
Although the stick shaker presents effective tactile and aural indications of the angle of attack needed to achieve maximum performance of the airplane, angle-of-attack information should be presented in a visual and more readily interpretable format.

 NTSB Abstract AAB-04/01
The probable cause of the accident was determined to be the “captain’s failure to adhere to the agreed upon flight test plan for ending the test maneuver at the onset of pre-stall stick shaker, and the flight crew’s failure to assure that all required switches were properly positioned for anti-spin chute deployment.
FDR data indicated that the stick pusher activated twice (following two pitch up oscillations) after the airplane’s pitch angle reached the stick shaker and stick pusher activation thresholds, and that the pilot made elevator inputs to counter the downward pitch angle induced by the stick pusher.
Based on this data, it is evident that the second combination of stall, stick pusher activation and subsequent up elevator inputs by the pilot occurred at an altitude too low for recovery when the airplane was experiencing wide excursions in pitch attitude and roll.
