Brainboost - what is stiction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
Stiction Stiction is the resistance to the start of motion, usually measured as the difference between the driving values required to overcome static friction upscale and down scale.
Valve stiction is characterized by a period of time when the actuator attempts to move the valve but the valve does not move, followed by the valve jumping open and then moving smoothly.
The stiction is regulated by a friction model whose parameters you specify.

How To Measure And Combat Valve Stiction On Line   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
On-line measurements of stiction are much more valuable than off-line measurements of stiction since when the valve is in service the line pressure and material in the line effect the stiction and mechanics of the valve.
The stiction in the loop is the total amount of controller output change required to make the process variable move.
Using this method, when the valve is within the stiction band, the integral action is missing from the controller, the controller output will not integrate, having the end effect of removing the stiction cycle from the loop.

 anti-stiction coatings for MEMS
In-use stiction may be caused by capillary forces, electrostatic attraction, and direct chemical bonding.
To circumvent the stiction problem, many MEMS developers are forced to switch to bulk micro-machining, which is less capable and versatile than surface micromachining in terms of device function.
One attractive approach to tackle the stiction problem is to provide low-energy surface coating in the form of an organic passivation layer on the inorganic surface [3, 4].

 Stiction - The Hidden Menace
Stiction is the resistance to the start of motion, usually measured as the difference between the driving values required to overcome static friction upscale and down scale.
The word stiction is a combination of the words stick and friction, created to emphasize the difference between static and dynamic friction.
Stiction can keep the stem from moving for small control input changes, and then the stem moves when there is enough force to free it.

 News Release - Diamond Micromachines
The machines at the Department of Energy's national security facility are etched from a surface of amorphous diamond, the hardest material in the world after crystalline diamond in a manner compatible with current silicon chip and surface micromachine manufacturing techniques.
Diamond interests researchers because of its superior wear-resistant qualities, resistance to stiction -- a combination of stickiness and friction -- and potential as a biocompatible material that could be used inside the human body for medical purposes without generating an allergic reaction.
(Stiction is a tendency for an object resting on another to stick, rendering devices useless.) This is because, says Sullivan, while silicon is hydrophilic and therefore attracted to water that may be present in the atmosphere, diamond is not.

 About Bob Ashurst's Research...
Stiction refers to unintentional adhesion of compliant micromechanical surfaces either to each other or their substrate.
Engineering approaches to avoid release stiction (stiction that occurrs during the release step as a result of liquid capillary forces) include supercritical drying techniques, vapor release techniques, and freeze sublimation.
However, these techniques are not capable of addressing the problem of in-use stiction (stiction that occurrs after the release, i.e., while the device is in operation) and other approaches must be investigated.

Laboratory Services Coating nano hardness tester adhesion wear scratch nano indenter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
Stiction refers to the adhesion originating from the tribological contact of moving parts, which can result in immobilisation of the device.
With this kind of microsystem, stiction can occur between the sides of the blade and their respective stopper surfaces.
Stiction problems need to be solved in all types of devices, e.g., relay contacts, motion-stopping structures, valves, etc. Currently, the friction in bearings is the main requirement for tribology research in non-silicon micro actuators.

UCL Eprints - Modelling valve stiction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
Stiction is the most commonly found valve problem in the process industry.
In spite of many attempts to understand and model the stiction phenomena, there is a lack of a proper model, which can be understood and related directly to the practical situation as observed in real valves in the process industry.
This study focuses on the understanding, from real-life data, of the mechanism that causes stiction and proposes a new data-driven model of stiction, which can be directly related to real valves.

The most common definition is that stiction is the strong interfacial adhesion present between contacting crystalline microstructure surfaces.

But, put simply, stiction is the unintentional adhesion of MEMS surfaces that, at one point or another, is the bane of almost all MEMS researchers.

Abstract: The presliding displacement and stiction properties of friction models are investigated.
It is found that existing single-state-variable friction models possess either stiction or presliding displacement.
A class of general one-state models is derived that is stable, dissipative and exhibits both stiction and presliding displacement.

A certain amount of force is needed to break this bond, or overcome the "stiction." Stiction comes from many places in a mechanical system other than the wheels, too: ball bearings, grease in gearboxes, and many others.
Stiction -- to my knowledge -- is not a real scientific term, but it is commonly used.
It is a contraction of "stick-slip friction" and is characterized as the force required to overcome static adhesion/bonding forces that may occur when two objects are at rest with respect to one another.
