 Ramsar Sites Database
The threatened duck Stictonetta naevosa is recorded in the site.
As floodwaters retreat, species such as Stictonetta naevosa, Malacorhynchus membranaceus and Gallinula ventralis disperse widely through southern and eastern Australia.
The site is a complex and extensive freshwater wetland system comprising channels, waterholes, lakes and numerous shallow floodout plains, interdune corridors and swamps.

Removal of cats was from a small area via the use of cat-proof enclosures.
It was developed as part of the global initiative on invasive species led by the Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP) and is supported through partnerships with the National Biological Information Infrastructure, Manaaki Whenua-Landcare Research and the University of Auckland.

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Stictonetta naevosa
Stictonetta naevosa has been recorded from wetlands across southern Australia, with major concentrations in the Paroo-Warrego catchment (Currawinya Lakes), Eyre-Georgine-Mulligan catchment (Lake Torquinie) and possibly at Lake Galilee.
Other inland sites where substantial numbers have been recorded include Cooper's Creek and Bulloo River catchments, the wetlands of the Barkly Tablelands, and Lake Gregory in the central-north of Western Australia.

A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF RECENT DABBLING DUCKS (TRIBE ANATINI) BASED ON COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
These include the Blue Duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos), Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membrana- ceus), and Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa).
Hymenolaimus was studied in detail (Kear 1972), and Stictonetta was later removed from the Anat- inae on the basis of morphological and behav- ioral comparisons (see Johnsgard 1960a, 1961a, 1962).
The unique Torrent Duck (Merganetta ar- mata) was placed in the monospecific tribe Mer- ganettini (Delacour and Mayr 1945) but consid- ered to be closely related to Anas (Niethammer 1952).

Water would be supplied from a bore in the Bland Creek Paleochannel borefiled, 20 km east of the mine site and would pump up to 16 megalitres per day.
Lake Cowal is home to many endangered flora and fauna species including the Austral Pillwort (Pilularia novae-hollandiae) Winged Peppercress (Lepidium monoplocoides) Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus) Black-necked Stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) Painted Snipe (Rostratula benghalensis) Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) Yellow-bellied Sheathtail-bat (Saccolaimus flaviventris) Little Pied Bat (Chalinolobus picatus).
The Lake supports fish of high conservation value such as the Silver Perch (Bidyabus bidyabus) which is protected in New South Wales; the Freshwater Catfish (Tandanus tandanus) which is subject to a voluntary ban by commercial fishers; and Macquarie Perch (Macquaria australasica) also protected.
