Stiff Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stiff Records record label was created in London in 1976, at the outset of the punk boom by entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Jake Riviera.
The next few years were the Stiff halycon period, with many Top 20 chart placings and big-selling albums, until spiralling debts and a lack of managerial direction forced a sale to Island Records in 1984.
Stiff is also well remembered for their eccentric but highly effective promotional campaigns, such as the two "Train" package tours in 1977 and 1978; Elvis Costello's "busking outside CBS Records" arrest or perhaps the 12 different wallpaper sleeves printed for Ian Dury's second album "Do It Yourself", with associated unscheduled makeovers of unsuspecting record shops.

Elvis Costello - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Costello's first album for Stiff My Aim Is True (1977), was a moderate commercial success (No. 14 in the UK and Top 40 in the US) with Costello appearing on the cover in his trademark oversize glasses, bearing a striking resemblance to a [mock?] menacing Buddy Holly.
Stiff was a new independent UK label, formed to provide an outlet for practioners in the then-burgeoning pub rock scene in London.
Despite the record's poor reputation, a few songs were well-regarded, such as "The Comedians" (later recorded, with rewritten lyrics, by Roy Orbison, and also quoted, in its original version, in Alan Moore's seminal comic series Watchmen).

Stiff was set up to record pub rock, yet it prospered because of punk, the style that displaced the pub rock movement.
Moreover, Stiff started Britain's do-it-yourself independent label boom but was never comfortable with the anarchic philosophies or brash recordings favoured by most of its successors, such as Beggar's Banquet's 4AD, Daniel Miller's Mute, and Miles Copeland's Step Forward (the last of which moved quickly from punk to the pop-oriented sound of the Police).

Wreckless Eric gained notoriety as part of Stiff Records' highly eccentric roster of punk and new wave artists during the late '70s.
Stiff Records signed him in 1977 and had Nick Lowe produce Eric's debut single, "Whole Wide World"/"Semaphore Singles." In addition to producing the record, Lowe played most of the instruments on the single.
Wreckless Eric fashioned his third album, Big Smash, as a commercial breakthrough, but the record was poorly received and neglected by Stiff, prompting him to quit the music industry in the early '80s.

The idea of Stiff as a renegade independent company, operating almost as a kind of guerilla force within the music business, first suggested itself when he was skating across the wastelands of North America as tour manager for Dr Feelgood.
Three years later, with Stiff now a thriving commercial venture (its success with singles by Nick Lowe, the Damned and their album was catalogued in detail in the July 9 edition of MM), Jake's opinions on the Industry Of Human Happiness have hardly mellowed.
Stiff's success, he adds has coincided with the re-assessment of established values forced by the emergence of the new wave in rock, and the label's commercial prosperity (only Max Wall's "England's Glory" 45 failed to recoup recording costs) has, he feels encouraged the growth of other independent concerns.

Anyone with a passing familiarity of Stiff knows that it was the early home of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe was their house producer, and countless talents like Graham Parker, Madness, Ian Dury, and notable also-rans like Wreckless Eric and Rachel Sweet all called Stiff home for awhile.
Some of them are regulars on the tribute record circuit (especially Bill Lloyd and Matthew Sweet, who would probably pay tribute to your mother if she asked them to), while others are virtually unheard of.
Stiff devotees will want this, though, not just to hear what these 'kids' have done with their originals but to get the few original Stiff rarities that are sprinkled in here as bonus.

The great thing about the late 70’s music scene in the UK, apart from the fact that it was poised to kick prog rock firmly in the seat of its velvet loons, was that a new camaraderie developed between young musicians.
Sadly, their fans preferred the punkier side of Stiff Little Fingers and when the band released their 1982 opus, Now Then, many of the faithful felt a little left out, and despite the album’s huge critical acclaim it remained as an unjustly neglected piece of work.
For five years the individual members pursued various musical projects until they came to their collective senses in 1987 and decided, after a Tom Robinson re-union, that they might repeat the exercise themselves.

Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.
While Elvis Costello originally got his start on Stiff, he has only one song here - probably a god thing, as we all have a good idea what he sounds like - leaving more room for the lesser known artists of Stiff.
Though full of the kind of tongue-in-cheek humour that, apparently, Stiff Records was famous for, the result of the non-journalistic approach is that there's very little real information on the music, the history, the label, and the context, hidden by the cheeky writing and witticisms.
