  Labelling of voice quality
The changes in voice source behavior may be associated with segmental or suprasegmental elements on the linguistic layer of communication.
It is rather striking that the tense/lax voice opposition (in the sense of the degree of overall muscular tension) is used linguistically (Maddieson and Ladefoged, 1985).
Hoarseness is a term used to explain the perceived voice abnormality as originating at a voice source rather than resulting from abnormalities in vocal tract configuration and is perceptually related to the noise generation during phonation.

Slack voice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term slack voice (or lax voice) describes the pronunciation of consonants with a glottal opening slightly wider than that occurring in "normal" (modal) voice.
Although the IPA has no dedicated diacritic for slack voice, the voiceless diacritic (the under-ring) may be used.
The Shanghainese "muddy" consonants are also slack voice, the primary effect of which is a slightly breathy quality of the following vowel:

Phonation - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
These are harsh voice ('ventricular' or 'pressed' voice), which involves overall constriction of the larynx, and faucalized voice ('hollow' or 'yawny' voice), which involves overall expansion of the larynx.
For the pairs of English plosives, however, the distinction is better specified as voice onset time rather than simply voice: In initial position /b d g/ are only partially voiced (voicing begins during the hold of the consonant), while /p t k/ are aspirated (voicing doesn't begin until well after its release).
Outside of Europe, a lack of voicing distinctions is not uncommon; indeed, in Australian languages it is nearly universal.

My crude theoretical compendium is that if the voice coil moves forward within the pole piece when responding to a bass note (50hz) it is off center for a moment and effects the field of the pole piece.
Just because the voice coil is within the confines of the magnet doesn’t mean that it is operating in totally "linear" fashion.
Thus, the primary motor function is the voice coil inducing a varying electrical field upon the magnet/pole piece.

 Categories of Voice
This is an area of the voice which is situated between one register and another, when the voice breaks or drops a note consistently in the same area, it is usually considered to be a transition point or Passaggio between one register and another, i.e., from a heavy voice to a light voice.
Creaky voice (also called laryngealisation or vocal fry, especially in the US), is a special kind of phonation in which the arytenoid cartilages in the larynx are drawn together; as a result, the vocal folds are compressed rather tightly, becoming relatively slack and compact, and forming a large, irregularly vibrating mass.
The middle voice, also known as the "blend", is the term used to describe the range of notes which marks the crossover between the chest and head voices.

Creative Coaching - A Catalyst for Excellence - Michael F. Landrum
Our voices betray the subtlest nuance of feeling, and picking up these signals is well within the capacity of most people with normal hearing.
Because the voice is centered in the back of the throat, there is a tendency to be lip-lazy and mumble.
But even more importantly, through such a voice the speaker’s feelings, strong or subtle, tender or filled with intense determination, will be able to work their magic on the listener.

Stiff voice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term stiff voice describes the pronunciation of consonants with a glottal opening narrower, and the vocal cords stiffer, than what occurs in "normal" (modal) voice.
Although there is no specific IPA diacritic for stiff voice, the voicing diacritic (a subscript wedge) may be used in conjunction with the symbol for a voiced consonant.

phonation Information Center - phonation process
A voiced sound is produced when an overpressure of air in the lungs causes the vocal folds to vibrate.
The resulting sound is modified by movements in the vocal tract, by the volume of the airflow and by the degree of constriction of the folds.
The voice source is used to change intonation and the tone of words by varying the subglottal pressure as well as the tension of the vocal folds.

Chris Columbus's movie version, on the other hand, is not an update so much as a throwback.
The same could be said of Adam Pascal, whose impassioned Roger has cooled down to a tepid brooding.
Maybe Columbus directed the stage actors to tone down their performances for the camera, or maybe it's the age difference between the two leads (he's nine years her senior), but the attraction between Roger and Mimi fails to ignite.

Caan, sly and droll, underplays every half-baked line; he and a crackerjack team of bit players— notably James Fox as Grant's bemused, indulgent boss and Scott Thompson as an uptight, glassy-eyed FBI man— hover weightlessly above the material, while a partly reformed Grant knots his brow trying to keep his masochism in check.
-style comedy of mannerisms Stiff Upper Lips, which parodies the Merchant-Ivory adaptations of E. Forster books, gathering the story lines of Howards End, A Room With a View, and A Passage to India into one upper-crust English family's slapsticky trip around the world circa 1908.
Trouble is, a satire can't work if your subject understands the joke better than you do— the movie has a hearty laugh about the novelist's precious characters and homoerotic subtexts, but Forster himself had a better one.

"Scared Stiff" is a remake of a 1940s Bob Hope comedy called "The Ghost Breakers" which was directed by George Marshall, who also happened to direct this version as well.
There was something about the sound of his voice, his breezy attitude, his facial expressions that made jokes that were really not that funny work.
"Scared Stiff", in the beginning, doesn't make much use of its surroundings and doesn't create any suspense, though I suppose anyone who watches this movie is mainly doing so for the laughs.

In their tepid version of the "Hot Lunch Jam" scene from "Fame," for example, students sit in a sun-splashed courtyard, play the guitar and sing "ooh, ooh" while smiling sweetly at each other.
While it's admirable of the filmmakers to try and offer something for young people that's not hopeless or subversive, what they've come up with here is earnest and wholesome _ but unfortunately stiff and corny.
"Raise Your Voice," a New Line Cinema release, is rated PG for thematic elements and language.

After another moment of silence, he asked angrily, "Where were you this morning?" Before I could answer, he added, "I waited for you and you didn't show up!" I could see that he was extremely agitated, so I remained silent, hoping that he would calm down.
