Stiffelio @ Royal Opera House, London: opera review
Stiffelio's power to provoke has gone, but its power to move has not.
This performance, however, was neither overbearing nor gratuitous: rather, the character's emotional turmoil in facing her husband, her lover, her father and her community was presented with harrowing clarity.
What pleased was the lack of histrionics: Stiffelio's animalistic, Otello-like rage was kept firmly under lock and key, and when it did burst forth, it did so with venomous fury.

Classical Music :: The Classical Source :: Stiffelio :: Classical Music
Radvanovsky relished the role of Lina, Stiffelio’s wife who is having an affair with Raffaelo (a House debut for Reinaldo Macias, replacing Andrew Sritheran), arousing both her father’s suspicion and her husband’s jealousy – the great denouement being Stiffelio’s act of forgiveness from the pulpit.
For 140 years “Stiffelio” was something of a lost Verdi opera; censors had savaged the score before the première in Trieste in 1850.
Act Two, outside the church where Stiffelio discovers Lina’s father Stankar fighting with Raffaelo and finds out about her affair also has a similar vista which is equally as threatening as the claustrophobic interior of the meeting hall, inside which all the action of Acts One & Three is crushed.

 Artsandentertainment: Revealing Verdi
Stiffelio kicked into high gear in the amazing tumult of sound and fury that wound up Act I. The company, directed by Brian Robertson, brought a fine sense of coherence to the complex scene in which Stiffelio confronted his wife, Lina, with suspicions of her adultery.
Stiffelio is a superb tenor part, and Todd Geer gave an uncanny performance, at once impassioned and full-throated in the big ensembles but also capable of conversational expressiveness in the minister's tortured introspection.
Geer was alternately stern and vulnerable in the finale, as Stiffelio took to the pulpit to read the parable of forgiving the woman taken in adultery, and then publicly forgave his wife.

If "Stiffelio" might generate controversy today, imagine the situation in 1850, the year Verdi attempted to premiere the work in Trieste.
Verdi stubbornly refused to conform his artistic sensitivities to this environment and was frequently in hot water with the censors as a result.
A favorite of Placido Domingo's and a regular fixture with the Washington Opera and the Met, Miss Villarroel has a burnished voice that navigated Verdi's cruel vocal challenges — which not infrequently forced her to dive from her highest to her deepest notes within a bar or three — with great skill and passion.

Stiffelio is considered "early Verdi" to musiclogists who classify things, but, in reality, it is a final transition between the maestro's earlier (but most enjoyable) works, and the mature craftsmanship of Rigoletto.
Stiffelio is not performed often, so whether you live near a performing arts center or not, this DVD may be the only chance to experience it.

 Stiffelio e Aroldo
