Martin Lass - Mirror, Mirror, in the Sky
Life is a mirror reflecting our lessons back at us, giving us the opportunity to grow in consciousness.
Astrology is saying that our lives personally and globally can be seen in the mirror of the stars… that our lives and the movement of the planets tell the same story… that by examining the movements and positions of the planets at our birth, we can understand ourselves and our lives better.
If you look back at your life and carefully consider every event—particularly the ones that you feel were ‘bad’ or unjust—and try to find the hidden blessings, with the help of the planets and the above exercise, you will gradually begin to see a clear pattern running through you life.

In it, a parallel beam of light changes its direction as a whole, whilst still remaining parallel; the images formed by a plane mirror are virtual images, of the same size as the original object (see mirror image).
There are also parabolic concave mirrors, where a parallel beam of light becomes a convergent beam, whose rays intersect in the focus of the mirror.
Early mirrors consisted of a plate or sheet of polished metal, often silver when the reflected image was for viewing (such as for personal grooming) but also of other metals when only the intensity of reflected light was important.

Life as we know it is a planetary phenomenon: its origin appears to have required interactions among liquid water, a gaseous atmosphere, and minerals provided by a solid planetary surface.
It is conceivable that the distribution of life in the universe could come to be understood in the larger context of the evolution of the cosmos.
Given a sufficiently large sample of planets examined for signs of life and sufficiently accurate models for galactic dynamics, it might be possible to draw some conclusions regarding the probability of life arising and evolving as a function of galactic locale.

Abiogenic Origin of Life: A Theory in Crisis
In the case of the scientific investigation of the cause of the origin of life, we have two difficulties: the conditions under which it occurred are unknown, and presumably unknowable with certainty, and the phenomenon (life) is so complex we do not even understand its essential properties.
Since, at that time, the view prevailed that life was nothing more than complicated chemistry, their ideas became widely accepted among those seeking to establish a naturalistic origin for life on the earth.
Unfortunately for spontaneous origin of life enthusiasts, the preponderance of the amino acids produced by these experiments are either glycine or alanine, the two simplest amino acids, and many non-proteinous amino acids are produced that will compete with the 20 proteinous amino acids in any abiological reactions.

AO uses deformable mirrors to reform the incoming light as a coherent, undistorted plane wave as the light was before it entered the atmosphere.
Currently the deformable mirrors are placed after the regular optics, so more mirrors are necessary and therefore a decrease in image quality results (2000).
This design provides the advantage that all of the approximately 1800 mirror segments would be exactly the same, allowing the mirror segments to be mass-produced, decreasing the cost per unit area of the telescope.

The discrepancy caused the mirror to be ground too flat by two microns, an extremely small error in a mirror so large, but an error that resulted in the wrong prescription for the optics, preventing the Hubble from achieving the expected focus.
The mirror's ability to focus all the light gathered to fine pinpoints is critical to proper function of the two cameras.
Since replacing Hubble's mirror while in space is out of the question, and bringing the telescope back to Earth for repair is not practical‹reentry through Earth's atmosphere would subject the telescope's sensitive optics to contamination‹scientists plan to compensate for the spherical aberration by modifying the telescope's replacement instruments, commonly referred to as "second-generation" equipment.

The mirror's surface is coated with a thin layer of highly reflecting aluminum that is replaced many times during the life of the telescope.
The secondary mirror reflects the converging rays to the bottom of the telescope and through a hole in the objective mirror to a focus behind the objective.
One might think that putting the secondary mirror and its supports or the observer's cage for the prime focus into the path of the light rays would obscure part of the image, but the only effect is to cut down the amount of light reaching the objective.

Parabolic vs. Spherical Mirrors   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The general idea is to draw lines parallel to the mirror or lens, and lines originating from the focal point, and various intersections between these graphically show object and image location (and size).
In a graphical problem involving a spherical convex mirror, the student is instructed to construct one pair of incident/reflecting rays as follows: A ray is drawn from the object to the mirror, parallel to a base reference (a line from the center of the mirror to the base of the object).
Below is a demonstration of moving incident rays on a spherical mirror and a parabolic mirror.

Mirror making:   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The primary mirror in a Newtonian type reflecting telescope is a 'concave mirror.' It is of course usually a round mirror and thus is shaped as though it were a 'slice' cut out from a sphere, or a round ball.
The depth of this 'sagitta' as it is called is calculated by multiplying the radius of the mirror by itself and dividing the result by twice the radius of 'c'..
The focus can still be 'trimmed ' even during the finer stages of fine-grinding if you want to be within a fraction of an inch of the true 64 inch focus which this particular mirror is supposed to have.

The transition which he makes from the Law and the Prophets to the twofold commandment of love of God and of neighbour, and his grounding the whole life of faith on this central precept, is not simply a matter of morality—something that could exist apart from and alongside faith in Christ and its sacramental re-actualization.
Outstanding among the saints is Mary, Mother of the Lord and mirror of all holiness.
In these words she expresses her whole programme of life: not setting herself at the centre, but leaving space for God, who is encountered both in prayer and in service of neighbour—only then does goodness enter the world.

It's almost too painful to recount - the announcement of significant spherical aberration in the primary mirror, and the realization that some kinds of anticipated HST science (quasar host galaxies, for example) simply could not be done in that condition.
Still, some kinds of programs could be carried out, particularly UV spectroscopy and some kinds of imaging for which deconvolution with the telescope's strongly peaked and stable (although degraded) point-spread function.
In later analysis, we included results from ISO and the JCMT to measure total dust masses in two different ways, with the comparison leading to interesting limits on how much dust could still be hiding in the cold or small structures that would elude easy detection.

 Myth Today by Roland Barthes
Zhdanov made fun of Alexandrov the philosopher, who spoke of 'the spherical structure of our planet.' 'It was thought until now', Zhdanov said, 'that form alone could be spherical.' Zhdanov was right: one cannot speak about structures in terms of forms, and vice versa.
Myth is a pure ideographic system, where the forms are still motivated by the concept which they represent while not yet, by a long way, covering the sum of its possibilities for representation.
Justified by the political dimension, the mythologist is still at a distance from it.

With the spherical aberration, metrology of the reflective null connector used to test the primary mirror, combined with data from star images obtained from the HST on orbit, allowed the radially-symmetric aberration to be well characterized and the prescription of the primary mirror to be determined accurately.
Well characterized radially-symmetric spherical aberration meant that the flaw could be corrected by polishing the opposite surface correction into an optical element, or mirror, and placing that optical element into the optical trains (optical paths) of the instruments at the location where the image from the primary mirror appears.
With the solar array jitter, the thermal deformation and stick-slip mechanisms introduced in the solar array due to day/night and night/day transitions were characterized through on-orbit and ground testing, and modifications made to the design of the solar array bi-stem supports and mechanisms.
