Stillmatic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon its release, Stillmatic was hailed by hip-hop fans and critics alike as Nas's best album since his landmark debut, Illmatic.
Stillmatic was one of the most highly anticipated hip-hop albums of the year, primarily due to the fallout from Nas' heated battle with rival Jay-Z.
On Stillmatic, Nas retaliated with the anticipated song, "Ether", a response to "Takeover" that labeled Jay-Z as both a sell-out artist, a hypocrite, and of stealing lyrics from Biggie.

 :: MVRemix: Album Reviews - Nas - Stillmatic ::
I remember hearing this album for the first time just one day before I turned 19 and from that point on to today, the number of mental notes I made regarding this aspect or that aspect or whatever aspect were lost.
Although this song does not live up to the rest of the album, it is 'Stillmatic.' This can be compared to the best tracks that the streetwise 'Nastradamus' made, but with an 'It Was Written' flow.
Yes and no. It indeed serves as a sequel in the sense that it reunites L.E.S, Nas, and AZ, but all three are now 'Stillmatic.' 'Life's A Bitch' featured two MCs and a producer struggling on their knees who got high because they never knew when they were going to go.

 Nas: Stillmatic (2001): Reviews
'Stillmatic', as ever, is far from flawless but, at its best, it addresses the hip-hop landscape of 2002 as lucidly as 'Illmatic' did that of '94.
Stillmatic wouldn't be a proper Nas record if it didn't contain at least a few regrettable detours into bad taste, and the album boasts its share.
Stillmatic is all the proof anyone needs that Nas isn't as special as he was five years before the album's release.

The Guide -- Nas’ Newest Exceeds Expectations
Anchored by the lead single “Got Ur Self a…,” Stillmatic does not succeed with the usual radio friendly tunes of popular hip-hop, but instead with a raw sound that impresses not only at first listen, but over and over as one keeps noticing more and more intricacies in Nas’ lyrics.
Stillmatic is not just limited to firing shots at other rappers.
Stillmatic is an amazing album that nearly makes me forget the nightmare Nastradamus.

And this helps him on some of the spottier tracks on "Stillmatic." It was only a matter of time before someone sampled "The Sopranos'" theme song, but "Got Ur Self A..." joins "Nas Is Like" as the most inspired post-"Illmatic" singles.
In the intro, Nas swears "it's always forward I'm moving / never backward, stupid." But "Stillmatic's" centerpiece is the reflective "2nd Childhood," with a DJ Premier beat that you could pour on your mashed potatoes.
Most of "Stillmatic" is just as essential, and it's not just because it includes the only recorded evidence of praise for Ma$e (you reading, Smithsonian?).

Just by the title, STILLMATIC makes obvious its yearning to recapture that feel, a ridiculously tall order if not impossible, but it comes dangerously close, which merely makes it one of the top albums of its year.
On Stillmatic, Nas attempts to prove, for the last time, that Illmatic was no fluke.
Illmatic and Stillmatic share a lot of the same themes: jealousy, envy, street life, paper chases and drama.

Nas : Stillmatic - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dropping many of the mainstream hooks and featured performers in order to focus his rapping, Nas proves he's still a world-class rhymer, but he does sound out of touch in the process of defending his honor.
Despite the many highlights, a few of these tracks (most were produced by either Large Professor or Nas himself) just end up weighing him down: "Smokin'," one of the worst, is an odd G-funk track that would've sounded dated years before its release.
Stillmatic certainly isn't as commercial as past Nas output, but it places him squarely behind the times.

 Review of Nas's Stillmatic
So you waited for Stillmatic as proof positive that Nas really is lying in the lyrical gutter somewhere, stripped of his medals, fallen back to earth.
Well that’s too bad because that’s not what Stillmatic is about, and the rubber neckers should be ashamed of themselves.
“Stillmatic (The Intro)”, “Ether”, and “Got Ur Self a…” are all street rattling playground disses.

 Stillmatic Review (SNICKA.com)
I thought Nas’s career was done after hearing Jay-Z rip him on “The Takeover” and I still remember the bitter taste left in my mouth from his last two releases I Am… and Nastradamus.
While a more mature side is shown for a majority of Stillmatic, the lyrical ferocity that Nas brought to Jay-Z on the response record “Ether” does surface on some occasions.
Stillmatic is a solid album that shows the maturation of one of the best lyricists to ever wield a mic.

Nas: One Mic - PopMatters Music Video Review
And before that, he took a minute to do the Bono-Puffy-all-star extravaganza for the benefit cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Mainstream and all tied up with post-9/11 flag-waving as it was, the single did bring Nas in a lyricist first, and charismatic performer second.
Stillmatic is all about returning -- to roots, ideals, neighborhoods, dreams, and ambitions.
But "stillmatic," a kind of motion in poetry, appears to be just right, a way to reimagine time and space inside, rather than according to someone else's measure.

After I Am and Nastradamus were panned, and with Jay Z launching an all out assualt on Takeover in 2001 off of Jay's Blueprint CD, many, including Jay, thought Nas was finished.
Instead, Takeover seemed to snap Nas out of his years' long funk, and near the end of 2001, Nas retaliated with "Ether" off the album Stillmatic, which may be the best rap CD released in the last 2 years.
While many rap fans focused on "Ether" and the beef, the rest of Stillmatic is what made this CD a classic.

VH1.com : News : Nas Out To Prove He's Stillmatic
Earlier this year, Nas blasted the Roc-A-Fella Records camp on "Stillmatic," and more recently he proclaimed his prowess on the underground gem "The General." "Stillmatic" saturated underground mixtapes late in the summer, and the Swizz Beatz-produced "The General" made its way to the streets last week.
The game plan for Stillmatic was simple — Nas wanted to show the world he was as "Nasty" on the mic as he was seven years ago when he debuted with the universally accepted classic, Illmatic.
Stillmatic was recorded in the Bahamas and New York and should be wrapped up by next week.

The furious 'ether' is a brilliant reply to Jay-Z's verbal barbs and 'you're the man' helps fans to realise the pressure Nas is under to reproduce his best work.
