Stilts, as their name implies, have the longest legs of any bird except the flamingo.
The common fl-necked, or pied, stilt, Himantopus mexicanus, an elegant bird with a fl back and white belly, is cosmopolitan in temperate and tropical regions.
Stilts are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Charadriiformes, family Recurvirostridae.

The Black-winged Stilt is a large (35 to 39 cm) fl and white wader with long orange-red legs and a straight fl bill.
Black-winged Stilts are related to Banded Stilts, Cladorhynchus leucocephalus, which have a broad chestnut band across the breast (absent in young birds) and lack the fl on the back of the neck.
Black-winged Stilts prefer freshwater and saltwater marshes, mudflats, and the shallow edges of lakes and rivers.

Black-necked Stilt seem to prefer fresher water than avocet, and though frequently found together in or near fresh water ponds aren't normally found in the very alkali ponds that avocet frequent.
Stilt are also found in the flooded hay fields around Burns and similar areas.
Like avocet, they nest on the ground, and a brooding stilt is an interesting sight, with the long, fragile-looking legs folded under the bird's body.

The closest I could find in my books (on Australian birds) is the Black-winged stilt, but again the neck and head colouration patterns are different.
Had a browse around the net and think I've identified it as a Pied Stilt (which is a subspecies of the Black-winged Stilt).
