Stilt Sandpiper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stilt Sandpiper, Calidris himantopus, previously Micropalama himantopus, is a small shorebird.
It has resemblances to the calidrid sandpipers, especially the Curlew Sandpiper, and recent genetic analysis has shown that it is closely allied to that species, necessitating its return to the genus Calidris.
Juvenile Stilt Sandpipers resemble the adults in their strong head pattern and brownish back, but they are not barred below, and show white fringes on the back feathering.

If you hunt hard enough photos of Stilt Sandpipers, you can certainly find a few in which the legs were dull in colour, or concealed by mud.
Similarly the ear coverts of non-breeding Stilt Sandpipers should normally be quite heavily streaked (a sort of foreshadowing of the diagnostic chestnut ear-patch seen in alternate plumage) but the field sketches depict a bird with pale ear-coverts.
Curlew Sandpiper bill shapes are not as stereotyped as the submission might imply, and they differ slightly between the sexes: males have slightly longer bills, and in both sexes, some individuals have bills that are more nearly straight than others.

I have often spoken of the great differences as to size and colour that are observed in birds of the same species, and which have frequently given rise to mistakes, insomuch that the male, the female, and the young, have been considered as so many distinct species.
BONAPARTE was, in truth, the first who described this bird; and although some differences might be found between his specimen and the one described in the work just mentioned, they are trifling compared with those which I have observed between seven or eight individuals all procured from the same flock at a single shot.
The females were all larger than the males, and differed from each other not only in the markings of the plumage, but also in the length of the bill, to the extent of a quarter of an inch, and of the legs, to a still greater extent.

 Birds - Stilt Sandpiper
Like most birds that spend part of their lives at least in Arctic desolation, these sandpipers, not knowing man, have little fear of him, being of the same gentle, confiding disposition, apparently, as the dowitchers, with which they may some-times be found, lured by the sportsman's decoys.
Yet when they walked—for they do not run as actively as true sandpipers, this species being a connecting link between sandpipers and snipe—they moved grace-fully and easily.
One characteristic they have that reminds one of the avocet and fl-necked stilt: on alighting they first teeter, then stand motionless as if to steady themselves and make sure of their balance.
