	Stimmung: The compositional process
		The motivation to compose Stimmung was a commission of the city of Cologne for the vocal ensemble Collegium Vocale of the Rheinische Musikschule.
		The religious cruelty isn’t in Stimmung, only the sounds, the whole general feeling of the Mexican plains with their edifices going into the sky- the quietness, on the one side and the sudden changes, on the other.
		Throughout the piece edifices are erected and assimilated and the listener, is in effect put in that position of a viewer, who gradually discovers that the overlap of structures creates a new visual repertoire that is far beyond the basic shape of the isolated structures.

		First performed in 1969, Stimmung was a landmark in Stockhausen's music: a natural development from his intuitive, text-based pieces, and unimaginably far removed from the hard-line serialism he had pioneered through the 1950s and early 1960s.
		With a spectacular sunset thrown in for good measure, it was hard at times to concentrate on the music and to surrender to its very particular sensibility.
		The rapport between the singers seems almost telepathic, and the way each section merged perfectly into the next, with material introduced and then absorbed into the textures as part of a continuously evolving process, was involving.

		All of the band members are highly virtuosi musicians, but Michele has probably no matches among contemporary keyboard players and is on par with those whose names are more than well known to the lovers of Symphonic Progressive.
		"Stimmung" is stylistically a very diverse album, which, yet, as you'll see now, doesn't conflict with the general description of the band's music I put at the very beginning of this paragraph.

		My friend who is a fellow fan of Stockhausen thinks of Stimmung as "his silly piece." It's so accessible that it's very fun too -- unusual for him.
		Stimmung was inspired by time Stockhausen spent in Mexico where he would sit on a rock for hours staring at ruins, noticing how they were slightly out pf phase....
		Stockhausen often worked with massive (and complex) forces, but here, all we find are six unadorned voices, gradually chanting their way through a litany of sacred names, erotic verse, meditative intonations, all utilizing only the harmonics of a single root B-flat tone that can be produced by the human voice.

		Stimmung walks the tightrope between good fun and self-indulgence -- primarily the work of Camper Van Beethoven alumni Jonathan Segel and Victor Krummenacher, Dent's music tosses industrial, new age, techno, pop, country and reggae sounds into a blender, then rips off the lid and lets the finished product splatter everywhere.
		The end result is music that deserves to be commended for its sheer bravery and eclecticism, yet it's simply not engaging over an extended period; Stimmung was probably much more fun to record than it is to listen to.
