Stinsford House   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Stinsford House now belongs to the Viscountess Galway, who succeeded, some five years ago, to the estates of the late Earl of Ilchester who was her father.
In fact, the marriage turned out to be a very happy one and Lady Susahna and her husband lived at Stinsford for many years, not at all regretting the fact they had had to leave London.
Stinsford is now listed, at the Dorset County Hall, as an ancient building and no alterations can therefore take place without their permission.

Thomas Hardy - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Hardy fell ill in December 1927 and died in January 1928, dictating his final poem to his wife on his deathbed.
His funeral, on 16 January at Westminster Abbey, was a controversial occasion: his family and friends had wished him to be buried at Stinsford, but his executor, Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, had insisted he should be placed in Poets' Corner.
Hardy's novels, stories and many of the poems take place in the "partly-real, partly-dream" county of Wessex (named after the Anglo-Saxon kingdom which existed in the area).

Under the Greenwood tree  - Thomas Hardy's Wessex - Thomas Hardy's Novels
The fictional "Mellstock" is closely based upon the real villages and hamlets of Stinsford and Bockhampton, where Hardy was born and brought up; the Dewey's house is clearly Hardy's birthplace, and the ejection of the quire from the West Gallery based upon the Hardy family's experience with the vicar c.
At the time just prior to Hardy's birth, many churches in Dorset still retained the old "quire" - a group of musicians and singers, who led the music in services from the West Gallery, which is behind the congregation.
The quire at Stinsford was replaced with an organ just about the time of Hardy's birth, and subsequent resentment about this explains why Maybold's removal of the quire is explained, in near-libellous terms, as due to his infatuation with Miss Day himself.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Hardy, Thomas
As the son of a stonemason and a servant girl, who later joined the ranks of distinguished men of letters, Hardy was acutely conscious of his humble class origins and modest education.
Hardy's novels – particularly the later ones – are marked by a grim determinism shading into pessimism but this is balanced by acute social criticism and a deep sympathy with the plight of the human individual in an indifferent and godless universe.
His art is shaped by the social historian's desire to preserve 'a fairly true record of a vanishing life' (General Preface) and by the Realist writer's aim to present the private, domestic tragedies and triumphs of ordinary individuals in a rural environment.

 Chapter Six
It was totally dark here”—when added to the name, suggests the foot of Stinsford Hill, but as before it requires a local knowledge to understand why Hardy made the change).
Hollow Hill is on the road from Stinsford turn to Bockhampton Cross; it is still deeply embowered in trees.
Hardy could in 1896 still have called the hamlet around the church West Mellstock, but presumably he felt it right to distinguish through names the fictional version of Stinsford from the Bockhamptons; unfortunately he had already called the parish after the main village, and so the vicarage and church are now in a nameless limbo.
